Another worthwhile excursion for bird-watchers and for anybody who loves beautiful natural scenery, is a kayak trip on Okarito Lagoon. Okarito Nature Tours operate guided boat tours, but it is also possible to just rent a kayak and paddle off on your own.

The turn-off to Okarito settlement is at The Forks, another 9 miles (15km) south of Whataroa. It was near Okarito, incidentally, that the Dutch explorer Abel Tasman first set eyes on New Zealand in 1642. A monument next to the Youth Hostel marks the event.

From The Forks turn-off it is no longer far, past the trout-rich waters of Lake Mapourika, to Franz Josef Village and the glaciers of Westland National Park.
