Fox Glacier Village, New Zealand Vacations, Tours and Travel Packages

Fox Glacier Village is another 15 1/2 miles (25km) further south of the park Headquarters. Access to the glacier is provided by two unsealed roads a short distance to the south of the village.

The northern approach road (Fox Glacier Road) runs along the north bank of the Fox River and brings you closest to the glacier. From the carpark, a track leads over rock debris to the impressive wall of ice that marks the terminal face. Once again visitors are warned not to venture onto the ice without a guide!

The southern approach road (Glacier View Road) runs along the other side of the Fox River. The Chalet Lookout Walk (1 hour return) starts from the carpark and allows panoramic views of the glacier's lower reaches. However, the views are even more spectacular if this track is combined with the Cone Rock Walk, a side track that branches off the Chalet route. The entire round trip would take about 3 hours. As at Franz Josef, it is also possible to take a spectacular helicopter or skiplane flight over the glaciers.
