Moray to Maras Mountain Biking Day Trip
This extremely varied route is considered by many cyclists to be one of the best one-day biking trips in Peru. A combination of defined paths and narrow trails pass through the Sacred Valley's agricultural fields, architectural sites and villages. It offers the cyclist the chance to feel the freedom of the great outdoors and to enjoy a day of excitement on the down-hills, together with the satisfying sensation of exercising on the gentle uphills.
Your private transportation picks you up from your hotel in the Sacred Valley at 9am. The Marin Hawk Hill SE Mountain Bikes are already loaded on the vehicle's roof. From here you are taken on a 45 minute drive to the plains of Chinchero, starting point of today's trip. While the guide and mechanic ready your bikes, you'll have time to try on your helmets and gloves. After a light snack of water and fruit, you mount your bikes, which have been pre-selected and adjusted for your size.
During the first few miles of the trip you'll ride on a wide dirt road surrounded by low hills and a carpet of agricultural fields. This section will let you become familiar with your bicycle and warm up on the gentle incline.
After about one hour pedalling, you'll arrive to the Inca terraces of Moray (11,620ft). Spend some time visiting Inca ruins once used as an experimentation area for agricultural purposes, then continue riding on the last part of the dirt road connecting with a beautiful single track, enjoying wonderful views of the Urubamba Mountain Range. Along this section you'll have the chance to experience some technical uphill and downhill riding. The path leads to the town of Maras (11,083ft), arriving at about noon to enjoy a light picnic lunch, including typical Peruvian snacks.
After a short rest, we start the most exciting downhill section of the trip. The single track leads to the Maras Salt Pans (9,965ft), where you'll be able to see how the local people have been extracting the salt from the soil since pre-Inca times. The final part of the trip is a one-and-a-half mile combination of dirt road and steep single track leading to the Urubamba River, where your vehicle is waiting to take you back to your hotel. Arrive back at your hotel at about 3pm, ready to take a shower and relax for the rest of the afternoon.
