Described by Jacques Cousteau as the ‘Caribbean of the Amazon’ because of its rare ‘blue’ waters, the Tapajós region of the Amazon is still undiscovered by mass tourism and offers a more remote option for the adventurous traveller, who wishes to explore the Amazon in style. What's special about this region is that in a relatively small distance, you will find the three types of rivers present in the Amazon basin: black waters, yellow waters and the beautiful and rare blue waters, each with its own ecosystem.

Four popular myths must be dispelled for any prospect visit to the Amazon:
THERE WILL BE LOTS OF ANIMALS – the Amazon is not the place to see huge varieties of wildlife since they tend to hide away in the deep forest. You will see lots of birds, some monkeys, river dolphins and alligators.
THERE WILL BE LOTS OF BUGS in areas of black and blue water rivers, there are in fact less mosquitoes then in any place of the Brazilian coastline.
YOU WILL ENCOUNTER NATIVE INDIANS – real Indians that still live ‘naked’ and live in huts can only be found in very remote areas. You will however visit many indigenous communities that lead very basic lifestyles.
YOU CANNOT SWIM – on the contrary, in most rivers, swimming is one of the most unforgettable experiences possible.
The Amazon is a hot and humid destination. French explorer, Jacques Cousteau nick-named the Tapajós ‘Caribbean of the Amazon’ thanks to its clear water rivers and white sandy beaches that are revealed between August and April. During the rainy season, the Amazon is also in full splendor and visits will entail exploring the flooded forest and cruising in canoes almost at tree canopy level due to the variation in water levels in different seasons (10-15m) Temperatures in the Amazon are high averaging 31.4oC (90F). Rainfall is heavy but tends to be concentrated in 1 or 2 hour periods with the rest of the day sunny. However, it is not uncommon to have longer windows of rain during the rainy season.
