The city is named after the 1320meter-high hilly ridge forming the "beautiful horizon" on its outskirts. With the exception of visitors who pass through on their way to the Baroque villages further inland, most foreigners come to Belo Horizonte on business. However, if you happen to be passing through, you should consider setting aside some time for a brief visit.

The interesting sights in the center of town can easily be reached on foot, beginning with Praga da Liberdade (Independence Square), site of the state government's main administrative building, Palacio do Governo, and the municipal library, Biblioteca Pdblica. The square is a meeting place for young and old, and is especially animated on market days. Fridays are for flowers, Saturdays are given over to antiques, and on Sundays craftspeople sell their work. Various regional delicacies are also available from food vendors in the marketplace. |
