Sabara Vacations and Luxury Travel Packages

Situated 720 meters above sea level and 25 kilometers east of Belo Horizonte, Sabara (population 100,000) is a perfect portal through which to enter the world of the Minas Gerais Baroque - a venerable and glorious representative of which is to be found on Praqa Getulio Vargas: Nossa Senhora da Conceigao dates from 1701, making it one of the oldest Baroque churches in the entire Minas area. The three-naved church features a coffered ceiling, and contains several of the Asian motifs that constitute an important contribution of Portugal's former colonies in the Far East to the manyfaceted Brazilian Baroque.

Unusual from several standpoints is the chapel in Largo do O known as Nossa Senhora do O, the name being an allusion to the pregnancy of the Virgin Mary, to which Catholics are not allowed to make explicit reference. The decoration of the interior of this chapel (whose exterior is relatively unornamented) is typical of the early Baroque in Minas: impressive wood carvings on the choir, and exotic red, blue and gold Chinese motifs on the front wall. Aleijadinho, generally acknowledged to be the master of the Minas Baroque, was active in Sabara in the 1860's, and contributed to the facade of the Carmelite church Nossa Senhora do Carmo.

Visitors to Sabara shouldn't miss the Museo do Ouro (Gold Museum) in Asa da Intendencia, which originally was the government office that regulated every aspect of gold mining. The museum has a scale model of a mine on display, complete with scales, panniers and gold jewelry, as well as a minting press dating from 1670.
