Sao Joao del Rei Vacations and Luxury Travel Packages

Two hundred kilometers south of Belo Horizonte, Sao Joao del Rei (population 75,000) is the southernmost Baroque city in Minas Gerais. Bandeirantes from Sao Paulo discovered gold and founded the first settlement here in the early 18th century. The town's most famous native son is Tancredo Neves, who in 1984 became the first democratically elected president of Brazil following 18 years of military rule. A memorial was built in his honor near the historic Ponte do Rosario, one of three stone bridges that spans the Corrego do Lenheiro, the brook that babbles through the town. Unlike Ouro Preto, Sao Joao has been extensively industrialized, which has greatly changed its character.

Among the most interesting sights are the church of Sao Francisco de Assis at Praqa Frei Orlando. Built in 1774 according to a plan by Aleijadinho, the convex form of the single-paved church and the round towers that are incorporated into the faqade make a singular and striking impression. Aleijadinho's exuberantly decorated portal featuring the Virgin Mary wearing a crown, as well as volutes and cherubs (all in soapstone), bear witness to the virtuosity of this great artist.

Several of Sao Joao's secular structures are also worth visiting, in particular the colonial mansions that originally belonged to prosperous families. In close proximity to the Franciscan church, at number 174 Rud Josh Maria Xavier, stands the baronial manor Solar do Barao de Sao Joao del Rei. Also worth a visit is the manor house called Solar da Baroness de Itaverava, as well as the monumental fountain dating from the 19th century. Both of these structures are on Largo do Carmo, near the Carmelite church.
