The spectacular success of the bossa nova song The Girl from Ipanema by the late Antonio Carlos Jobim, who died in 1994, has made this district world famous. Habitues of Ipanema are no less obsessed with the Body Beautiful than are patrons of Copacabana; but the Ipanemans appear to be a notch or two "higher" on the socio-economic scale. In any case, the price of admission - free as on all Rio's beaches - is not affected by this difference.

Founded in the late 1960s when flower power was at its height, a Feira Hippie (Hippie Fair) is held at Praia General Osorio on Sundays from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Today's visitors will find not hippies but craftspeople, painters, sculptors and junk dealers. There are many tourists among the clientele - not only foreign ones, but many southern Brazilians as well: for Paulistas and Gauchos (inhabitants of Rio Grande do Sul) a trip to Rio is always a treat.

On Fridays a large open-air market is held on Praia N.S. da Paz, featuring a large variety of stands selling tempting tropical fruits and spices. A stone's throw from the marketplace are the main retail outlets of two large jewelry manufacturers, Stern and Amsterdam Sauer, although visitors are strongly advised to review the state of their finances before entering the premises.
