Sugar Loaf

It is thought that the name Pao de Aqdcar is derived from the Indian word paudacuqua (peaked mountain), from which the Portuguese, perhaps struck by the resemblance of this now illustrious lump of granite to a loaf, may have construed the similar-sounding pdo de acucar, which means "sugar loaf."

The peak was climbed as early as 1817 by an Englishman, and in 1912 an aerial railway began transporting visitors to the top of the 395-meter-high bell-shaped peak. In 1972, Italian-made gondolas with capacity for up to 75 passengers began shuttling between Praqa General Tiburcio (Urca quarter) and the summit, with a change of cars at the middle station, 230-meter Morro da Urca (operating hours: 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.). The ten-minute trip abounds with magnificent vistas. There is also a restaurant at Morro da Urca, which can only be recommended for the view. From the observation platform on Sugar Loaf, visitors can feast their eyes on Guanabara Bay, the port, the city, the beaches and Corcovado - all in one uplifting panorama.

From here a stairway leads directly down to Rampa Joven, an enchanting footpath frequented primarily by Carioca couples with their minds mainly on love. Confirmed romantics should not miss the trip up to Sugar Loaf by moonlight and starshine. With the play of light on the surface of the sea below, and the starlit southern sky above, who can help but be entranced? Caution is in order on the return trip, however, because the taxi drivers at the valley station tend to overcharge!
