Parque da Independencia Vacations and Luxury Travel Packages

This park was originally named Parque do Ipiranga, after the neighborhood it serves. Its main points of interest include the Museu Paulista (see following page) and the 1,600-square-meter Monumento da Independe"ncia, which contains 131 admirable bronze figures. It was designed in 1922 by Ettore Ximenez to commemorate the centennial of Brazilian independence, and was built on the site where the future Emperor Pedro I announced Brazil's secession from Portugal. Visitors can enter the Capela Imperial located inside the monument to view the tombs of Pedro I and his wife, Leopoldine. Next to the chapel stands the Casa do Grito, the "House of the Cry," where the Prince Regent held a nocturnal vigil before proclaiming Brazil's independence with the cry "Independence or death!"
