Paraty, Brazil Vacations, Experiential Tours of Paraty

For anyone who enjoys the outdoors, historic sites & a unique vibe, Paraty is a must. Set in one of the most stunning stretches of the Brazilian coastline, the historic centre of Paraty was settled in the mid 17th century, in a calm bay, backed by rainforest clad mountains on one side and locked-in by the sea, on another.

A National Heritage site since 1958, Parity's colourful colonial architecture references back to its important role as a main port for gold export from Brazil to Europe. Today, it unites good hotels and restaurants, vibrant culture and nightlife, great shopping, tropical
rainforest treks, waterfalls and a bay full of islands and virgin beaches that are best explored by private boat.

Paraty is a year-round destination. FLIP, the International Literary Festival, is a winter highlight & packs the town with foreigners and
locals – a unique time to visit. Summer is a prime time for enjoying the scenic outdoors. Throughout the year, religious and cultural festivals are a constant & you are likely to come across one whenever you visit.

Since the introduction of the Literary Festival in 2003, the number of options of where to stay in Paraty has increased with the opening of many new properties in the historic centre and access to refurbished private villas in town and neighboring areas.

Heritage Hotels in Paraty

Doused with history and tradition, properties such as Pousada do Sandi, Pousada Marquesa and Porto Imperial, tap into a time tunnel experience of accommodation in Paraty and offer guests the opportunity of inhabiting spaces that value and highlight their
heritage. None of these hotels are of a top luxury standard, but make up for it by the charm of their historical buildings.

Hip Hotels in Paraty

In 2008, the opening of Pousada Turquesa gave Paraty its first property that transcended the heavy-colonial-furniture & historic artifacts model and moved towards a light, modern and hip environment, without forsaking the colonial heritage of its site. It is
currently the most luxurious option in Paraty.

Private Villas in Parady

For those who look for a more private and autonomous experience, a traditional colonial villa in the historic centre, is a superb way to
tap into the Paraty vibe. If being in town is not a priority, a stunning home on a private beach in the area, backed with tropical
rainforest, is a memorable experience.

On the Water

A large part of the appeal of Paraty is easy access to pristine and virgin beaches on board a private schooner. Spend the
day island hopping round the emerald-green waters of the bay. Since the town has no walking distance beach that is
worth spending time on, beach-seekers will find a day on the water the most enjoyable sea-side option.

The Paraty Experience

Since the introduction of the Literary Festival in 2003, the number of options of where to stay in Paraty has increased with the opening of many new properties in the historic centre and access to refurbished private villas in town and neighboring areas.

Paraty is at once an outdoor destination and a pulsing cultural and historic pole. The harmony between these distinct characteristics makes it worthwhile visiting for most people who venture to Rio or São Paulo and have at least a day to spare. Here are a few of our favorite ways of experiencing the town and exploring the neighboring region:

Treks and Waterfalls

For the more adventurous traveller, the mountains that back the region of Paraty are filled with great treks and beautiful waterfalls to be unveiled. Whether you opt to walk or ride a 4 x 4, the old Gold Trail offers the best circuit of falls in the region as well as being a relevant historic site for the more untamed visitor.

Historic Parady and Cultural Attractions

If an un-accompanied walk along the cobbled streets of Paraty is not enough to fulfil your thirst for history, informative monitored walks can be organized. With a focus on the numerous churches, Masonic symbolism and architectural highlights of Paraty, it traces it’s a great way to trace a mental timeline from its settlement and importance as a port in the 18th century to finally becoming an exemplary tourist hub and heritage site.

Paraty offers a selection of cultural events throughout the year that keep it pulsing and filled with diverse and vibrant groups of visitors. Traditional catholic festivities and processions; gastronomy, film and photography festivals, all attract audiences from far and wide.

The most influential is the Literary Festival, FLIP, during the winter, when celebrities and iconic characters flock from abroad and
across the country to experience the Brazilian version of the Stratford-Upon-Avon book festival. A must!

Cachaca Tastings

The art of making cachaça, the fundamental spirit for Brazilian caipirinhas, is deeply rooted in Paraty’s history and social development. Although there are no longer hundreds of small private distilleries in the region, the handful of active ones, ply the local shops and restaurants with its signature baseline spirit. Visits and tastings can be organised and are a worthwhile excursion and if you hit the town during the cachaça festival be ready to see it wreck carnage to the otherwise fairly orderly streets.

Climate in Parady

Paraty is a prime example of the tropical climate. Summers (December-February) are very hot and humid and temperatures can
reach up to 35oC during the day remaining hot even at night. Tropical thunderstorms are very common in the summer, and rains may settle in for a few days, although this does not decrease temperatures significantly. In the Autumnal months, from late March to early June, temperatures remain high and it rains much less with beautiful blue skies. During the winter, from late June to August, highest temperatures are around 26oC – cool for locals, but weather is usually sunny and dry. In the Spring, temperatures.
