Testimonials about Viviana Gaeta, South America, Galapagos, Europe Cruises Specialist

Hello Viviana,

Well we are back from Chile and we had a wonderful time. Thank you for planning a great itinerary that allowed us to experience so much of Chile.  The trip was outstanding and we had a fantastic time from the moment we arrived at the Santiago airport to when we left Patagonia.  It was a wonderful trip and something we will always remember.

Take care,

Majella

Feedback from Linda Barber, one our Virtuoso South America Specialists checking out the Amazon, March 25, 2008 Dear

Queridos todos (Dear Everybody),

Dolphins in the Amazon.

Fresh water dolphins, pink ones in fact!!!!

Thus far we have travelled on the main channel which is gray, thick and muddy from the high water. This is called "White Water" although it is anything but.

The water is high but not as high as it will get by the end of April.

The shorter trees look like bushes because most of them are up to their necks in water....the water now is 25-30 feet deeper than normal and will get up to 45 feet deep...this is unimaginable even though I have seen it...the land is flooded and the walking trails covered in 30 feet of water.

There is very little walking during the rainy season because most of the land is flooded...this means that this time of year you can get further into the bush in one day because the small skiffs can take us a far distance in little time...during the dry season it would be a hard day of hiking through hot and muggy air, mosquitoes, chiggers, cockroaches and all sorts of nasties. During the wet season there are hardly any mossies at all, mainly they are on the land areas.

The few times we were able to find dry land we looked like mummies, socks tucked into pants, all bundled up against the mosquitoes! Deet sprayed everywhere...I don't like to use deet but we were told to bring lots and figured that "they" knew what they were talking about! Some people got chewed on quite badly and some (myself included) hardly got a bite.

The chiggers seemed more of a problem than the mosquitoes.

I haven't had experience with chiggers and heard conflicting stories about them....how they bore into your skin, lay eggs, then crawl under your skin to the next spot and do the same....sure gave me the heebie jeebies and I am not one prone to squeamishness.

The one thing that seems to be true is that if you are unfortunate and get chiggers they drive you wild with itchiness....not sure how they are cured but since I have not been driven crazy with being itchy I must not have any (thank God!!)

Once we got far enough into the park reserve area, we found the very small tributaries of the main Amazon...called "Black Water"...these small tributaries were my favorite places of all. The water us clear but dark brown, like clear black tea. The greenery is very close overhead, overhangs the water, drags in the water...in my mind this is what the Amazon is supposed to look like!! It is so beautiful...the monkeys are close because the thick greenery is close to the water.

Black water is where the pink dolphins thrive.

They truly are pink and there is no mistaking them for anything but. Before planning this trip I had not even heard of pink dolphins.

I have a ton of photos of ripples where they were in the water but wasn't fast enough to capture a decent picture! They seemed to follow us, come up for a look see, then come up again somewhere else where of course my camera was not pointed!! I gave up trying to get a picture and just enjoyed watching them.

We saw a few gray dolphins in the white water areas but by count saw far more pink dolphins. The pinks even came to our large ship, La Amatista, and gave us a great breakfast show the next day... amazing what there is to see and experience in this worlld!

Belated Happy Easter to you all....more later!

Warmest regards,
Linda Barber, CTIE
All,

Feedback from Linda Barber, one our Virtuoso Galapagos Cruises Specialists checking out the Amazon, March 20, 2008

Dear Quick note.
We are out of the jungle and back in the big city of Lima.....got up at 3 a.m. to catch our 6 a.m. flight out of the jungle so are going to bed early tonight....

All is well.

Went Piranha fishing yesterday and wooly monkeys were trying to jump into our skiff...they had no fear....nice to be so remote that the animals were not afraid.
One of our tour members caught a piranha and as they flicked it into our skiff it came off the hook and everyone was jumping up and down and screaming and laughing...it was a small fish so no big danger but it was very amusing!!!  The day before our guide caught a snake (whhile we were on a night safari) and as he was showing us the attributes of the snake he accidentally dropped it into the bottom of the skiff....more jumping up and down and screaming followed by hysterical laughing......we really had a great time and got up close with nature that is for sure!!!

Surprisingly few mosquitoes in the Amazon....but chiggers have been far more bothersome.

A villager approached us yesterday and had a baby jaguar in a wooden box...he was selling the endangered specie and it was most upsetting to see...our guides will report it to the forest rangers but there seems to be no consequence for the people poaching animals and endangered trees....there must be something that can be done, but what can we do??
This is a huge issue and we saw so many illegal activities going on in the one short week we were in the deep jungle.

More later. Linda Barbera

Queridos todos (Dear Everybody),

Warmest greetings from the Amazon,

Sunrise on the Amazon, surrounded by sounds of the jungle is a privilege few have experienced and I count myself one of the lucky ones.

The sounds of the rainforest are many and unidentifiable to my untrained ears...we have an amazing encyclopaedic guide, George, who can tell us what every sound is and who is making the sound and why. He can even imitate the sounds to call them or to make them move. For example if we saw a sloth he could tell if it is a two toed or three toed sloth by the coloration of the animal... they stay so still they look like part of the tree so to get them to turn their head George would make the sound of the predatory harpy eagle which would make the sloth move its head so we could see it....after a few days we could see the sloth's without making them turn their heads.

Every day we get further from civilization and the more wildlife we see. It took until the third day before we started to see primates.....we are seeing first hand the effect of population on the forest and the native species.

In the remote 5 million acre forest preserve tourists are allowed in only as far as the second ranger station. There are 20 rangers to patrol 5 million acres of reserve. Poachers abound. With our own eyes we saw a Kapok tree that had been cut down and was being towed out of the forest. One might think big deal only one tree...BUT the wood is very rare, is sought after and the poachers can get up to $40 USD for the entire tree which is a huge amount of money here...the kapok trees are one of the tallest trees, are an endangered species, and with my own eyes I can see how few and far between they are. Our guide always points out excitedly when we see one.

When encountering poachers you must smile and be friendly because you don't know if they have a rifle hidden in the bottom of their dugout, especially if you are only a few people...we were a group of 14 so the danger was little for us.

Later the same day we saw a dead lungfish....they breath air and the proper name is Paiche...they are on the world endangered specie list. This one looked like it had been harpooned then escaped and died. We told the rangers about it and they went to find it and tow it in to the ranger station. It was massive, about 9 feet long and the scales are a few inches across... nothing goes to waste and the rangers were filleting the fish to eat.

Any of you who know me well know that I usually don't get too excited about environmental issues but after personally seeing poaching running rampant in the Amazon my attitude is changing and I feel that something needs to get done to help. The Peruvian government is corrupt (big surprise). Poachers get away with murder. They replant only 30,000 trees per year so the mahogany forest is stripped and not being replaced....I realize the people need to eat but capturing a baby jaguar to sell is beyond what could be considered reasonable...God only knows what they did to the mother in order to steal her baby.

If we gringos saw these things going on in the few short days, just imagine what goes on in a month, a year, 10 years....I have heard about the destruction of the rain forest my entire life but never realized that what is happening is so horrifying.

We all need to help do something, but what??

Got any brilliant ideas??

Warmest regards,
Linda Barber, CTIE

Testimonials about Viviana Gaeta, South America, Galapagos, Europe Cruises Specialist

Dear Viviana,

I never did thank you for the Peru trip that you arranged for us last August.
The trip was great. The service we received from was better than I expected. Some of the tour guides were very  helpful in finding and identifying the local birds. Also the Pueblo Lodge was great for nature lovers and my favorite lodge/hotel ever. Also noteworthy were the Colca Lodge, the lodge on Sausi Island and the Lake Sandoval Lodge. All of these locations were outstanding for their natural beauty and assistance in finding and identifying birds. I saw 150 new species of birds. We will certainly contact you when planning our next trip overseas.

Dear Viviana,

John and I would like you to know how very much we appreciate the very good service that you provided us in the planning of our trip around South America.  The itinerary was lovely, the hotels and inns first class and the guides from Abercrombie and Kent the best we've ever experienced.

We truly appreciate that you encouraged us to include Torres del Paine in our itinerary -- it was an absolute highlight of the trip!  And not nearly as difficult a journey as I had thought it would be.

Thank you so much for making this one of our most memorable vacations yet.

Sincerely,

Beth Bromberg

Hi Viviana,

We are back from the Honeymoon.  It was a fantastic trip and pretty close to perfect.  I wanted to thank you for all the recommendations and guidance.  We truly had a wonderful time and enjoyed all the accomodations, locations, and tours.  I think you really put us in areas that worked well for our personalities.. and wanted to relay the feedback.    As I mentioned this was my first time booking a trip through an actual travel agent, and I am quite sure it won't be the last.  I have you information handy as we will be planning another trip soon enough.

Thanks again!

Testimonial to Viviana Gaeta our South America and Galapagos Islands Specialist:

"Hi Viviana,

The trip was a success. Only Ivan, Marina and I made it, because at the last minute Aaron had school engagements he couldn't miss. The children truly enjoyed it very much and so did I. All went very well. The ship, thair services, the excursions and all Galapagos have to offer. There were several families with children of similar ages as mine so everybody mingled very well. We enjoyed all we could, the walks, the snorkeling, the sightseeing and the company on board. To me the best was the fauna … that you get so close and can observe well. And what can I tell you of a week of no noise, … buildings, … only the ocean … wonderful species … sunsets … We all returned feeling younger and very happy. A hug,

Monica Robinson Bours"
