Tour Itinerary
Day 1 • U.S. / Rio de Janeiro
Depart the U.S. on an overnight flight to Rio de Janeiro. (Meals Aloft)
Day 2 • Rio de Janeiro
Arrive in Rio early this morning and transfer to the Ipanema Plaza Hotel. There's time to relax and enjoy lunch on your own before a tour of Old Rio. This evening, enjoy a special welcome dinner at Rio Scenarium, complete with samba dancing. (B Aloft, D)
Days 3 & 4 • Rio de Janeiro / Iguazú Falls National Park
This morning, we fly to Iguazú Falls and transfer to the Bourbon Cataratas Resort, near spectacular Iguazu Falls. From Brazil and neighboring Argentina, we explore the scenic wonders of Iguazú Falls, one of the largest waterfalls on Earth, with over 275 cascades cutting through rich rainforest. We explore the trails that surround the falls, and walk along rainforest paths in search of wildlife, including hundreds of species of butterfly, grey brocket deer, capuchin monkeys, and great dusky swifts which nest behind the falls. Day 5 • Iguazú Falls / São Paulo
This morning, join our naturalist for a visit to the hummingbird gardens. Later, we fly to São Paulo and overnight at the Marriott. (B,L,D)
Day 6 •São Paulo / Campo Grande / Refúgio Ecológico Caiman
We depart São Paulo and fly to Campo Grande, continuing overland to Refúgio Ecológico Caiman. This afternoon, we explore the Pantanal during an orientation hike, where we’ll watch the sunset and see the landscape come alive with hyacinth macaws, black-hooded parakeets and other wildlife. We return to the lodge for dinner. (B,L,D)
Days 7 & 8 • Refúgio Ecológico Caiman
We spend two full days exploring the Pantanal, encountering a large variety of wildlife. Brown capuchin and howler monkeys frequent the forests, along with raptors such as great black hawks and king vultures. We enjoy afternoons canoeing on the lake, optional horseback riding and cruising the Rio Aquidauana, seeing Amazon kingfishers, capybaras and Paraguayan caimans. At the ranch we’ll enjoy a special barbecue prepared by the pantaneiros. (B,L,D Daily)
Day 9 •Refúgio Ecológico Caiman
We visit the local village, the Center for Hyacinth Macaw Research. In the afternoon, we take a safari where we may encounter greater rheas, giant anteaters and several species of macaws. We stop at the pantaneiros’ (cowboys’) barn, where we learn about their way of life. After dinner, we take a spotlight safari in search of tapirs, crab-eating foxes, ocelots and other wild cats. Day 10 • Refúgio Ecológico Caiman / São Paulo / En Route
After breakfast, we take a safari through four of the Pantanal’s habitats: open savannas, cordilheira (high-ground) forests, marshes and a beautiful field with scattered patches of forest, where we may see white-lipped peccaries, bare-faced curassows, red-footed tortoise and many other animals. We then return to Campo Grande and fly to São Paulo, with a late connection on to the U.S. (B,L,D Aloft)
Day 11 •U.S Arrive in the U.S. and connect with flights home. (Meals Aloft)
