13 Days Colonial Treasures Tour Package Duration: 13 Days / 12 Nights Priced From: $6,475 pp Dbl. Occ. Rio de Janeiro, Paraty, Iguassu Falls, Ouro Preto, Buzios
The jewel in Portugal's colonial crown, Brazil supplied the Portuguese with untold riches over the years. Gold, silver, and sugar were just a few of the commodities shipped from Brazil to the European market, making a small number of Brazilians extremely wealthy. Though the beautiful physical artifacts of this period - the grand mansions and churches - remain, so does the intangible but inescapable legacy of colonialism; this tour attempts to shed light on this complicated period in Brazil's long history. Begin with three nights Rio de Janeiro, with visits to Corcovado and Sugar Loaf Mountains. From Rio, travel overland to Paraty, a lovely colonial town where cars have been forbidden in order to preserve its charm. Spend two nights here, walking the streets of Paraty's colonial district and learning about what life was like for residents then. Continue to Iguassu Falls for two days; this series of 275 waterfalls straddles the borders of Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay for nearly 3 kilometers. Next, fly to Ouro Preto, which became a symbol of Brazilian colonial wealth when gold was discovered here during the 18th century. Visit the opulent mansions and ornate cathedrals that stand as testament to the wealth once enjoyed by the city's inhabitants. Finally, fly back to Rio and transfer overland to the resort town of Buzios. Spend the next couple of days at leisure enjoying the beautiful beaches of this once small fishing village that has become a sophisticated beach resort. Like all of our tours, this is simply a suggested itinerary, and can easily be customized to suit your schedule, budget, and interests
