Itinerary

Day 1, Depart USA
Begin your holiday with an overnight flight to Chile.

Day 2, Arrive Santiago
You are welcomed on arrival in Santiago and transferred to your hotel. This afternoon take in the sights, from the elegant European architecture to the panoramic San Cristobal Hill.  Plaza El Bosque Park & Suites

Day 3, Santiago – Winelands
Enjoy a day in the winelands of Maipo Valley, seeing how Chile’s famous wines are produced and sampling fine vintages.    Plaza El Bosque Park & Suites (B,L)

Day 4, Santiago / Easter Island
Few places have gripped the world’s imagination as has Easter Island, famed for 600 mysterious, stone moai figures standing in silent sentinel, gazing inland or out at the sea.  Fly 2,300 miles west to this lonely speck of land.  On arrival you are transferred to your hotel in Hanga Roa, the main town.  Hanga Roa  (B)

Day 5, Easter Island
This morning, contemplate the origin of Easter Island’s first inhabitants as you travel to Ahu Vinapu to see the ahus and Inca-like stonework, Rano Kao and the curious ruins of Orongo, center of the ancient birdman cult.  Explore the stone houses and petroglyphs and learn of the annual ritual involving outer islands.  This afternoon, set out to further explore at Ahu Akivi, the big platform, with its seven moais facing the sea, historic Ana Tepahu caverns and Puna Pao quarry, source of the giant red cylinders crowning many of the statues.  Hanga Roa Hotel (B)

Day 6, Easter Island
Heading south on a day-trip with a box lunch, you’ll have many perspectives to ponder the enormity of the task of carving the massive stone moai heads.  See the toppled moai of Akahanga, the Rano Raraku quarry from which the giant figures were carved, and reconstructed Tongariki, the biggest platform on the island.  Savor the solitude of picturesque, statue-strewn beaches along the coast.  Hanga Roa Hotel (B,L)

Day 7, Easter Island / Santiago
Depart this enigmatic island on your flight back to the mainland, where you are transferred to your hotel. Plaza El Bosque Park & Suites (B)

Day 8, Santiago / Lima, Peru
Fly today into Lima, where you are transferred to your hotel.  Founded in the 16th century, Lima preserves a fascinating past that you’ll explore on an afternoon tour of the Spanish colonial landmarks and Larco Herrera Museum.  Swissotel (B)

Day 9, Lima / Cusco
Fly over Andean peaks to Cusco, where Inca civilization peaked at 11,400 feet.  Acclimatize before touring Cusco’s historic core and ruins in the surrounding mountains.  Marvel at the stonework of Qenqo, Puca Pucara, and Sacsayhuaman.  Libertador (B)

Day 10, Cusco / Machu Picchu
A thrilling train ride aboard the Vistadome carries you through breathtaking vistas to Machu Picchu.  Walk with your guide through this remarkable “lost city” of stone.  Compare the simplicity of its civil dwellings with the high degree of perfection found in its religious temples and royal houses.  Stop frequently to simply absorb the mountaintop setting.   Machu Picchu Pueblo (B,L,D)

Day 11, Machu Picchu / Cusco
A free morning allows time to return to Machu Picchu on your own, or visit the thermal baths before returning to Cusco by train.  Libertador (B,L)

Day 12, Cusco / Urubamba Valley - Ollantaytambo
Descend to the Inca’s sacred valley of Urubamba for a day of cultural immersion.  Visit the market of Pisaq and continue to the “living museum” town of Ollantaytambo, with its extensive ruins and unfinished temple of huge stones.  Libertador (B,L)

Day 13, Cusco / Lima
Depart by air back to Lima, where you are met and transferred to your hotel.  The balance of the day is at leisure.  Swissotel (B)

Day 14, Lima / Depart to USA
After breakfast, you are transferred to the airport for your homebound flight.  (B)
