Days 1-2: USA or Canada/Santiago, Chile Board an overnight flight to Santiago, a sophisticated, sprawling metropolis wedged between the Andes and Coastal Ranges. This afternoon, embark on a sightseeing tour that showcases the many contrasts of the city, from the colonial heart to the glass towers of the uptown area. See the Palacio de La Moneda (Presidential Palace), originally a colonial mint; the Plaza de Armas; the Cathedral; and the Central Post Office. Continue to San Cristobal Hill for a panoramic view of the city and the Andes before heading uptown to the modern district. End your day in the exclusive wine tasting center of Vineyard Concha & Toro, located in the center of the Vitacura, the shopping district. Day 3: Santiago This morning, the curator of the Pre-Columbian Art Museum takes you around for a private visit of the more than 700 exhibits that make up Chile's most important collection of pre-Hispanic artwork. Then head to Las Vertientes, located in Maipo Canyon, an area in the Andean foothills that is awash with almond and cherry plantations, sleepy mountain villages and roadside stands selling fresh-baked bread and empanadas. Stop en route at the Almaviva Vineyard. Created in 1997, this is Chile's first winery conceived and managed like a French château. Learn what is involved in producing an ultra-premium wine in a method that combines the best of French and Chilean winemaking traditions. Continue to the Haras de Pirque Vineyard for lunch and a visit to this winery whose name honors the country's oldest thoroughbred breeding stud, founded in 1892. Day 4: Santiago/Puerto Montt Board a flight to Puerto Montt, located in the Chilean Lake District. Settled by German colonists in the mid-19th century, Puerto Montt is the transport hub and access point to the southern Lake District. Embark on an orientation tour that takes you to the handicraft market of Angelmo before you arrive in Puerto Varas and your hotel. Then drive to Frutillar on the shores of Lake Llanquihue for lunch at a local restaurant where the chef prepares a meal using traditional local ingredients. Day 5: Lake District/Bariloche Today's journey takes you across the Andes, travelling by bus and boat through a wilderness region with stunning mountain scenery at every turn. Begin with a drive along the shores of Lake Llanquihue visiting several villages along the way. After stopping for lunch at a local restaurant, cross into Argentina at Puyehue National Park. Day 6: Bariloche Explore Bariloche this morning. The area is known as "Little Switzerland" and has breathtaking Alpine scenery. Day 8: Buenos Aires Embark on a tour of cosmopolitan Buenos Aires, known as the "Paris of South America." Highlights include an introduction to the beautiful parks and gardens of Palermo; the old quarters of San Telmo, the birthplace of the tango; the colorful La Boca district, the port barrio and working class heart of the city; and a private visit to historic Zanjon de Granados. See some of the landmarks connected to the Peronismo legacy, including Recoleta Cemetery, where the elite of Buenos Aires have been laid to rest. View the memorial to Eva Perón, Argentina's most famous inhabitant, who left behind a legacy of social justice that remains a half-century after her death. After lunch, enjoy a tango lesson taught by a couple of professional tango dancers. This evening, sit down to dinner at Esquina Carlos Gardel, one of the most elegant tango venues in Buenos Aires.
