Examine two extremes of Ecuador. First, visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Cuenca and walk the cobbled streets and riverbanks with your guide. Meet local artisans and glimpse local life. See Ingapirca, Ecuador's most important Incan ruins. Then fly over the Andes Mountains and look into snow-capped volcanoes on your way to the Amazon Basin. There you travel by canoe to your jungle lodge for a rainforest adventure.
Tour Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive in Guayaquil and transfer to your hotel.
Day 2: Tour the bustling downtown, then visit the traditional neighborhood of Las Peñas. Drive across the coastal region via Cajas National Park to see hundreds of clear, cold lakes, streams and rivers. Be on the look out for the many resident bird species en route to Cuenca.
Days 3-4: Cuenca is a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site and considered to be one of Ecuador's hidden treasures. Walk the cobbled streets to explore flowery plazas, interesting museums and beautiful river banks. See how panama hats are produced in a local hat factory or peruse local crafts in a market. Then step out of the city limits to the tranquil countryside for a glimpse of local life. Visit a local textile family workshop to observe the process of weaving macanas (traditional shawls) and wander through the vivid market.
Day 5:
Travel to the most important complex of Inca ruins in Ecuador, Ingapirca, built on top of Cañari constructions that date back to the 13th century and were used to worship the sun. Later, fly to Quito, the second highest capital city in the world and one of UNESCO's World Cultural Heritage Sites.
Days 6-8: Fly over the Andes Mountains to cross the equator. Look into snow-capped volcanoes that rise to a height of nearly four miles to reach the headwaters of the Amazon Basin. Then in Coca, transfer by motorized canoe and boat to the Napo River and your jungle lodge. En route, observe colorful birds (heron, kingfisher, osprey), giant otter and black caiman. During your time here, join a native Anangu guide, who is also an official Yasuni Park Ranger, to explore the wonders of the rainforest and the observe the diversity of wildlife that live there.
Day 9: Return to Coca and fly to Quito for a colonial city tour of the ornate churches, cathedrals and Baroque architecture - among them La Compañía Church, created with seven tons of gold.
Day 10: Board your homebound flight.
