It was in Peru that the mighty Inca Empire flourished and the Spanish Conquistadors began their domination of Andean South America. Lima, the Spanish-styled capital, is filled with glorious churches and grand colonial buildings. With its mighty stone fortresses, Cusco, the former Inca capital and cultural center, is an engineering marvel. One of the most remarkable sights in the world is set on a remote mountain top: Machu Picchu, Lost World of the Incas.
Tour Itinerary
Day 1-2 - City of Kings Spanish colonial influence is evident everywhere in Lima, especially in the architectural masterpieces of Plaza Mayor, with its Government Palace, City Hall, Cathedral, and Archbishop’s Palace. Visit lovely residential districts with ocean views, and great museums with superb collections of artifacts from Inca and pre-Inca civilizations. Enjoy an exclusive tea at a colonial mansion occupied by the same family since 1535. On the second evening dine with a Peruvian family. Miraflores Park Hotel
Day 3-4 - Urubamba, Sacred Valley The following day you’ll travel to Cusco, deep into the heart of the Andes Mountains—the beginning of your ascent through the valley—leading ultimately to Machu Picchu. Urubamba was the ancient ceremonial center of the Inca. At Ollantaytambo you admire the magnificence of this fortress, and the impressive fortress of Sacsayhuaman as well. Afterwards, stroll through the quaint streets of the present day town. You’ll lunch at a large private home in the countryside, and have an opportunity to bargain with vendors at a typical market in Pisac. Exciting activities like horseback riding and white water rafting can be easily woven into your journey. Sol y Luna Hotel
Day 5 - Machu Picchu Travel by rail to Machu Picchu and stay overnight at your uniquely situated hotel on top of the mountain. Rediscovered in 1911, Machu Picchu is the only known Inca city to remain largely intact. The setting of this mysterious stone sanctuary is worth the trip alone. Take a guided tour of the ruins before lunch, and in the afternoon explore the ruins on your own in peace as other travelers depart for the valley below. Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge
Day 6-7 - To Cusco In 1534, Pizarro invaded this city and built upon the foundations of razed Incan structures. Tour the city, including some spectacular churches, and Loreto alley, a fine sample of the old town and its remarkable Inca walls. Your hotel is a converted colonial seminary, built on the remains of the palace of an Incan emperor. Hotel Monasterio
Day 8-9 - Cusco to Lima Fly to Lima and transfer to your hotel until your departure from Peru the next day. Miraflores Park Hotel
