2 Days Puno and Lake Titicaca Tour Package

Duration: 2 Days / 1 Nights
Priced From: $198 pp dbl. occ.
Dates: Contact Travelwizard

Lake Titicaca is the world's highest navigable lake and the center of a region where thousands of subsistence farmers eke out a living fishing in its icy waters, growing potatoes in the rocky land at its edge or herding llama and alpaca at altitudes that leave Europeans and North Americans gasping for air. It is also where traces of the rich Indian past still stubbornly cling, resisting in past centuries the Spanish conquistadors' aggressive campaign to erase Inca and preInca cultures and, in recent times, the lure of modernization. When Peruvians talk of turquoise blue Titicaca, they proudly note that it is so large it has waves. This, the most sacred body of water in the Inca empire and now the natural separation between Peru and Bolivia, has a surface area exceeding 8,000 square kilometers (3,100 square miles), not counting its more than 30 islands.

Tour Itinerary

Group Size: Min 1 - Max 24

Accommodations: Hotel of choice

Day 1. After your arrival into Juliaca airport you will be met and transfered to Puno 30 minutes away. En route to Puno, located on the bansk of Lake Titicaca we stop at the Sillustani Burial Towers.

Hundreds of years ago, the local inhabitants from the Altiplano living on the shores of Lake Titicaca, built a series of funeral towers to bury their kings and other royalty. The Sillustani towers are perhaps the finest and the most perfect cylindrical constructions of ancient Peru. As we tour through Sillustani you are given a view into the life of pre-Inca civilizations and their beliefs of the afterlife.

From her we travel to your hotel of choice.

Day 2. When the Incas extended their Empire, especially under the great Inca Pachacutec, the Indians living on the shores of the lake Titicaca withdraw on the Titicaca. The main vegetation is the Totora reed. With this they built their floating islands. The Incas left them alone and centuries later until now they still live on their islands. They live from fishing and recently from the sales of souvenirs to tourists.

The Totora reed is the most important material they have. The islands are in fact not really floating, but in rainy season, when the water level rises of the shallow end of Titicaca, some islands start to float. The reed at the bottom rotten so every time they have to pull up their islands. Their houses, boats, tools, fishing nets and souvenirs are also made of the same reed. Totora is even part of the menu, the taste is a little bit sour and sweet.

We spend today exploring these beautiful islands and the lake itself.

Day 3. Today you are trasnferred back to Juliaca for your onward flight.

Additional nights are available on request.

Arrival and return journey options of bus or train to Cisco are also available.
