Participants will be given the opportunity to experience a variety of traditional lifestyles in PNG -- from the subsistence farmers of the Wahgi and Huli peoples of the highlands, the river people of the Karawari in the lowlands, and the incredibly remote Hewa people of the Lagaip Valley. This program is not your usual cultural touring program, it is for those who truly want to experience how life was before the modern age, who want to discover cultures that were unknown by the outside world until the mid-20th century and those who have a passion for adventure.
Tour Itinerary
Day 1. Arrive Port Moresby to Mount Hagen. Upon arrival you will be greeted by Trans Niugini Tours staff for your onward flight to Mount Hagen on Air Niugini PX180. Upon arrival in Mount Hagen, you will be transferred by Four Wheel Drive to the Wahgi Guest Haus. Upon arrival, you will be given a traditional greeting. The Wahgi Guest Haus is a basic guest house in a traditional village setting, amongst sweet potato gardens -- the staple crop of the Highlands. Overnight Wahgi Guest Haus LD
Day 2. Mount Hagen At leisure. A full day is spent amongst the Wahgi people, experiencing village life and enjoying traditional activities. Overnight Wahgi Guest Haus BLD
Day 3. Mt Hagen to Mount Hagen. Today you will be transferred to Rondon Ridge, 30 minutes drive from Mount Hagen Town. Mount Hagen Town is in the upper Wahgi Valley - a valley with some of the oldest evidence of agriculture in the world. Perched high on Mount Kuta is Rondon Ridge, with unbelievable views of the Wahgi Valley. Overnight Rondon Ridge BLD
Day 4. Mount Hagen to Karawari. Fly by charter from Mount Hagen to Karawari, the mountains start to give way until eventually vast tracts of dense tropical lowland rainforest cover the landscape for as far as the eye can see. Sitting on a ridge above the Karawari River, Karawari Lodge boasts a spectacular view over hundreds of kilometres of dense tropical jungle. Day 5. Karawari Village. Today you will visit and overnight in a traditional Karawari Village. Houses built on stilts, rooves made from Moratar (sago palm leaves) and dug out canoes. The Karawari people are river people, collecting and processing sago from the swamps, fishing from the river and hunting in the forest. In this truly remote part of the road, there are no roads -- life revolves around the river. The Karawari is a place where the most common means of transport is paddling a dug out canoe. Day 6. Karawari Lodge. After spending the morning in the village, you will be transferred back to Karawari Lodge. Enjoy the 180 degree view over a huge area of rainforest, before the next leg of your experience begins. Overnight Karawari Lodge BLD
Day 7. Karawari to Hewa Village. Flying from Karawari to the extremely remote Hewa of the Lagaip valley. Climbing from near sea-level over the massive central ranges and descending into the Lagaip Valley. The Hewa were first studied as a cultural group by anthropologists in the 1960's. Prior to 2001, the Hewa did not even have an airstrip and the only access was by foot -- several days walk to the nearest road. Overnight Hewa Village BLD
Day 8. Hewa Village. A full day is spent amongst the Hewa people, learning about their culture, language and traditions. The Hewa, being on the edge of the highlands, have a culture that is an extraordinary mixture of lowlands and highlands cultures. Being extremely remote, they live very traditional lives and very few people speak Pidgin (the lingua franca of Papua New Guinea); let alone English. Overnight Hewa Village BLD
Day 9. Hewa to Tari. After a spectacular flight from Hewa to Ambua. Ambua Lodge is high on the slopes of the Tari Valley - home of the Huli, a colourful and proud people, still largely living the same way that their ancestors did. The afternoon is spent exploring the area surrounding Ambua - high mountain forests with roaring waterfalls beckon the intrepid traveller. Overnight Ambua Lodge BLD
Day 10. Tari. A full day of ecological and culturally based touring are sure to satiate those yearning for discovery. Enjoy a further full day of cultural and ecological touring. The Tari area is home to an incredible 13 species of birds of paradise, as well as numerous orchid species. Overnigt Ambua Lodge BLD
Day 11. Tari to Huli Village. Today; a trek through sweet potato gardens, past sugar cane, banana trees. After arriving at the village, you can rest your tired feet and learn about daily Huli life in a Huli village. Overnight in a Huli Village BLD
Day 12. Huli Village to Tari. After spending the morning in the village, you are then transferred back to Ambua Lodge for your final night in the Tari Valley. Overnight Ambua Lodge BLD
Day 13. Tari to Port Moresby. Departing from Tari airstrip on PX866/PX861 to Port Moresby. You will be met in Port Moresby by Trans Niugini Tours staff and transferred to the Airways Hotel. Overnight Airways Hotel BLD
Day 14. Port Moresby. You will be transferred by Trans Niugini Tours staff to your onward international flight. B
Note: Village accommodation is extremely basic -- in some instances, you may be sleeping in an actual villager's house; privacy is not guaranteed. Toilets will be pit-style in most instances. It is necessary for guests to provide their own sleeping bag, day-pack, rain jacket and sturdy walking boots. Please also take note that villages visited may change at short notice, due to changing local conditions.
