10 Days Wonders of New Guinea Tour Package

Duration: 10 Days / 9 Nights
Priced From: $5,035 pp dbl. occ.
Dates: Jan - Dec /08

Itinerary

Day 1 Fly USA to Port Moresby (Via Brisbane)

Please note international air from the USA has not been included in the package price.

Day 2 You cross the International Date Line

The International Date Line is an imaginary line on the earth’s surface that approximately coincides with the 180th meridian (LONGITUDE), and separates the calendar date. Traveling east across the line takes the traveler back one day; traveling west, takes the traveler forward one day.

Day 3 Arrive Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea

On arrival to Port Moresby, you clear customs - visas may be arranged in advance or on arrival.  If obtaining your visa on arrival, a fee of 25 Kina will apply.

Port Moresby lies on the southeast shore of New Guinea and is built around Fairfax Harbour, the island’s largest harbor. As the city capital and administrative center of Papua New Guinea, it has the greatest population density in the country.

Europeans became aware of this port city when British explorer John Moresby sailed through the Gulf of Papua in 1873. About 15 years later, Great Britain established the colony of British New Guinea here, and named Port Moresby the capital. The area was occupied by Motu and Koitabu people for thousands of years before the Europeans arrived. The Motuans, who migrated to the area about 2,000 years ago, have sustained themselves despite the nutrient-poor soil and low rainfall by building seaworthy sailboats and sailing along the Gulf of Papua to trade their pottery for sago flour.

Day 4 Fly Port Moresby to Tari

Transfer to the airport for your charter flight to Tari, where upon arrival you will be transferred to your accommodation at Ambua Lodge.

The Southern Highlands is where Tari is located and it is truly a tribal wonderland. Clans in the Southern Highlands have a strong and intricate social system little affected by change. It is one of the few places where the traditional way of life can be seen in everyday living. Ceremonial rituals are strongly observed. Tari is one of the few places left where men and women can be seen wearing traditional dress as part of daily living and a man's wealth is still counted by the number of pigs and wives he possesses.

Days 5-6 Touring, Southern Highlands

Enjoy two full days of cultural and ecological touring. The Tari area is home to an incredible 13 species of birds of paradise, as well as numerous orchid species. Learn how the Huli live and how they interact with and use their environment.  Venture along nature trails with traditional vine bridges, take pictures of secluded waterfalls, and possibly even the bird of paradise. The flamboyant Huli Wigmen of the Tari Valley have formed a strong bond between themselves and these beautiful birds, men revere the birds by imitating them in both daily and ceremonial life, decorating their human hair wigs with the plumage of only the most beautiful birds.

Day 7 Fly Tari to Karawari

Fly by charter aircraft to Karawari airstrip over some of the most rugged and impressive landscapes in the world. The country between Ambua and the Sepik region is an amazing array of jagged limestone that seem to rise and drop at impossible angles. From the airstrip, you will be transferred by river boat to Karawari Lodge. Sitting on a ridge above the Karawari River, Karawari Lodge boasts a spectacular view over hundreds of kilometres of dense tropical jungle. Inspired by local architecture and built with traditional materials, while still providing modern comforts.

Day 8 Tour – Karawari area

Wake up to the chattering of Lorikeets and Eclectus Parrots. After breakfast enjoy touring programs that provide insight into the amazing ecology and culture of the Karawari area.

Day 9 Fly Karawari to Mount Hagen

Fly by charter from Karawari to Mount Hagen, during the flight mountains rise up to startling heights out of the flat lands of the Sepik Basin. Mount Hagen Town is in the upper Wahgi Valley - a valley with some of the oldest evidence of agriculture in the world. Perched high on Mount Kuta is Rondon Ridge, with unbelieveable views of the Wahgi Valley.

Day 10 Tour – Hagen & Whagi valley

A full day is spent exploring the Hagen Area and Wahgi Valley. The Mount Hagen area is the home of the Melpa people, a people with a strong culture, who in the face of moderninity, still live largely traditional subsistence lifestyles. In the mountains surrounding the Wahgi Vally lives a stunning array of bird, orchid and plant life.

Day 11 Fly Papua New Guinea to USA

Bid farewell to this enchanting country and transfer to the airport for your flight to Australia and on to the USA.
