A volcano on one of the most beautiful lagoons in the world, Bora Bora, "the Pearl of Polynesia" remains that place of your dreams. The proud silhouette of its mountainous heart is made up of three peaks, the highest of which, "Otemanu" (727m) figure in the legend of Pahia. The island still takes pride in its warrior expeditions, their invasions by stealthy paddling of days of old, and its former control of Raiatea, its age-old rival. Bountiful nature has graced this island with a lagoon of translucent waters and immeasurable beauty, ringed by a rosary of heavenly islets. One of these motu is the site of the airport, while others have luxury hotels on them. One exception is the Toopua motu with a hill more than one hundred meters high where there are echoing rocks called "Hiro's bells".

The charm of Bora Bora goes way back in history and artists, painters, writers, philosophers and pleasure seekers follow in the footsteps of Alain Gerbault, Herman Melville and Paul-Emile Victor.
Bora Bora-undoubtedly the most famous island in Polynesia, Bora Bora is surprisingly small. But what this tiny gem lacks in size, it makes up for in beauty. Approach it from the air or sea, and you are greeted with a captivating vision... a coral reef dotted with emerald islets encircles the main island like a string of luscious pearls. At the center of this dramatic setting the chisel-like bulk of Mount Otemanu rises sharply out of the gentle lagoon, a palette of unimaginable blues and turquoises. Bora Bora underwater coral formations teem with countless brightly-colored fish, while a pod of playful dolphins breaks the shimmering surface, and an outrigger canoe glides lazily by.
Bora Bora Tahiti, Sailing in the lagoon
In this vast Bora Bora lagoon there is only one navigable pass, facing the principal village of Vaitape, with its eclectic mix of Polynesian, French and American culture. Life in Bora Bora is casual, relaxing, blissful. A place of dramatic beauty, warm waters, and gentle climate, Bora Bora is an enchanting island which bestows upon visitors a sense of peace--a special gift to take home with them from the Polynesian gods.
Bora Bora--No self-respecting traveler to the South Pacific Seas fails to put Bora Bora on the list of island to visit. It is a mere 150 miles from Tahiti, and therefore within comfortable distance by plane or ship. Arriving by air on the landing strip built on a coral reef off the shore of the main island already gives a fascinating view of the scintillating lagoon in every type of blue imaginable. The boat ride to Vaitape, which is included in the ticket, offers the kind of sight that makes most first time visitors suspect they have reached Eden itself: water, palms, sand, blue, green, white--that's all. Towering over this scenery is the 2300-foot volcanic peak Otemanu, sometimes crowned with a gentle wreath of clouds.
Be prepared----the first glimpse of Bora Bora is love at first sight. Sailors, poets, adventurers, honeymooners and other romantics have proclaimed this island to be the most enchanting, awe-inspiring, romantic place on earth. Bora Bora is one of the leeward islands and is located about 260 km northwest of Tahiti. Made from the remnants of an old volcano, and it surrounded by tiny reef-islets called motus, (Moh-toos) that ring the opalescent waters of the island. Coconut palms seem to quiver like a mirage on the horizon, and a confection of white sandy beaches dip down into aquamarine waters. Since the original Tahitian language did not have a B, its original name was Bora Bora, meaning first born.
As soon as you land you will see why this Bora Bora Island is considered one of the most beautiful islands in Tahiti. Dominant from the moment you arrive are the majestic Mount Otemanu and Mount Pahia, two towering volcanic peaks of black rock that protrude out of the center of the emerald green island. Often shrouded in clouds, these landmarks take on mysterious and mystic qualities. Bora Bora's brilliantly colored fish, intricate coral gardens and ever-clear water also create some of the very best undersea views you will ever find. For an off-road experience, you can ride a bike around the twenty-mile island and discover Bora Bora's ancient temples and villages.
Visitors to Bora Bora, who arrive by air, are shuttled on a catamaran from the airport to the warf at the main town of Vaitape (vie-tah-pay).
Because of the remoteness of this island, you will find prices higher than on Tahiti or Moorea. But for those who can afford it, the scenery and atmosphere is well worth it. On Bora Bora your hotel might be over the water with a personal canoe, a canopied bed with a glass floor where you can watch the tropical fish in the crystal waters of the lagoon. There you can snorkel in a fascinating aquarium, paddle an outrigger, explore the coral reefs, scuba dive and marvel at the magnificence of nature. Feel the exhilaration of the trade winds as you skim across the lagoon in a Hobie Cat, or sail yacht. See huge sea turtles and frolicking humpback whales, fish for enormous blue marlin, yellow fin tuna, and swordfish in the worlds most fertile waters.
