The bride then retreats to a ceremonial hut for a massage with Monoi and drapes herself into a Tahitian princess. Her groom, meanwhile, is escorted by canoe to a small beach, where he transforms himself into a Tahitian chief. The lovers reunite at the village ceremonial ground (Marae), where a Tahitian priest performs the ancient ceremony and recites the incantations. Village women rejoice this special moment with religious songs. A parchment of Tapa leaf is inscribed with the proof of your eternal vows to each other – the traditional village marriage certificate, a lasting symbol of your island wedding. Upon completion of the ceremony, the newlyweds perch atop the Royal chair, carried by four Polynesian warriors in a procession around the village. Spectacular views over the lagoon or the tropical garden paradise characterise each of the 114 bungalows, while inside the spacious interiors make extensive use of natural materials and unique design features. This includes beautiful bedheads with their intricate portrayal of sections from the two Gauguin paintings – Fatata te Miti (By the Sea) and Parahi te Marae (There Lies the Temple) – that influence the design concept of the whole resort. The 39 over-water bungalows, which branch off in two directions for optimal privacy, offer direct access to the lagoon as well as in-floor viewing platforms from which you can watch the colourful marine life below. 52 beautifully designed garden bungalows are surrounded by an oasis of flowers and plants, while the 23 beach bungalows have direct access to the white sandy beach and lagoon. Combining exceptional scenery with world class cuisine, the Sofitel Moorea offers three distinct restaurants and bars, each capturing the unique atmosphere of Tahitian life.
