Tour Itinerary Day 1: Papeete, Tahiti On arrival in Tahiti's capital city, meet your guide and transfer to your hotel. Day 2: Papeete/Nuku Hiva Board your flight to Nuku Hiva and settle into your lodge, which boasts views of the valley of Tapueahu, the island's "Grand Canyon." This afternoon, visit Taiohae, a village bordering the sea, and Tohua Temehea, a ceremonial site rich with stone carvings. Stop at Notre Dame Cathedral, built on the site of an ancient tohaua (sacred ceremonial ground). Day 3: Nuku Hiva Travel the island by four-wheel-drive vehicle with your guide, stopping first in the valley of Hatiheu. Examine archaeological sites as your guide narrates stories of the grand ceremonies held on these sacred grounds. Continue your journey through the coconut groves of Taipivai's valley, made famous by Herman Melville in his novel Typee. Day 4: Nuku Hiva/Hiva Oa Arrive at Hiva Oa, the largest and most fertile island with deep valleys, lush plateaus and thickly wooded forests. Your first destination on the island is the port village of Atuona, former home to painter Paul Gaugin and singer Jacques Brel. Visit their homes, along with museums which house copies of Gaugin's work. Day 5: Hiva Oa Enjoy a full day exploring this beautiful island. Begin with a breathtaking drive along the winding coastline to the picturesque village of Paumau. Located on the northeastern tip of the island, it is home to Takai, the tallest stone tiki in all of Polynesia. Lunch on homemade Marquesan dishes in the home of Marie-Antoinette. Day 6: Hiva Oa/Papeete After a morning at leisure, board a flight to Papeete for an evening looking out over the city and reflecting on your explorations of Marquesas.
