Thornbury Castle, Bristol, England Vacations, Honeymoons and Luxury Travel Packages

A magnificent 500-year-old Tudor castle-palace set in historic gardens and parkland, Thornbury Castle promises memories - memories of its royal past and also memories of the future, of the truly special time you will have when you experience the history of this remarkable hotel.
In 1535, King Henry VIII and his second wife, Anne Boleyn, stayed here. Princess Mary, later Queen Mary I, also lived here for several years. Courtiers have flirted with ladies-in-waiting in the ancient yew-hedged gardens. Serving girls have chattered in the stone-flagged courtyard. Today, Thornbury Castle still resonates with history. Step behind the heavy oak doors, however, and you'll find a magnificent hotel with roaring fires, delicious modern cuisine and sumptuous bedchambers - a truly special setting for a weekend away or for more formal occasions.
Edward Stafford, the third Duke of Buckingham received a royal licence to build this 'fortified manor' or castle-palace in 1510. Work started the following year but stopped in 1521 when the Duke was executed on trumped-up grounds of treason. Today, much still remains of the original 16th century building. Everywhere there is fascinating historical detail to enjoy - coats of arms, intricate oriel windows, arrow loops and ornate carved ceilings.
The Duke's watchword was 'dorene savant' meaning 'henceforth' or 'from now on'. In his words, then, Thornbury Castle is yours to enjoy 'from now on' - the wealth of the past combined with the luxury and comfort of one of England's finest hotels.
Thornbury Castle, Bristol Accommodations
Enjoy a regal night's sleep in the Duke's bedchamber where King Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn slept or favour the Gloucester bedchamber and wake up to a view of the oldest Tudor gardens in England - the Privy Garden and Goodly Garden. There are 26 bedchambers and all are fabulously atmospheric, most with four-poster or coronet beds, stone walls, tapestries, roaring fires, ornate carved ceilings and views to historic parkland and the River Severn beyond. The Tudor bedchamber even has arrow-slit windows.
Each bedchamber is an experience. For instance, the Duke's Robe Chamber is a four-poster bedchamber located on the ground floor, so suitable for those guests who are unable to climb stairs. The unusual feature of this room is the bathroom which is hidden behind a wooden panelled wall and access is gained by turning the heavy brass crucifix.
The Portlethen Suite has, in addition to a magnificent four-poster, a 'Murphy' bed concealed within the wooden panelling in the lounge adjacent to the stone fireplace and the suite is accessed via a wooden circular staircase.
The Duke's Jewel Chamber, one of two single bedchambers in the main building, features a wooden rounded panelled wall with many little cupboards and is reached via a stone staircase.
Although the original character of the rooms has been retained throughout restoration work, you'll find all the modern amenities that one would expect today. All rooms are luxuriously warm - most have real fires. They're also extremely comfortable with opulent, well-appointed bathrooms, colour TVs (carefully screened, of course) and welcoming touches such as the decanter of sherry you'll find on your arrival.
