Mountains

| |
|
The mountains in Alaska are amongst the special mountain areas in the world. Haines borders Glacier Bay National Park. The Park and the adjacent 27 million acres, including the Wrangell-St Elias National Park, comprise the largest protected wilderness area on the planet. It is an extremely jagged, glaciated, landscape containing several of the largest non-polar ice caps in the world. This terrain is uniquely suited to learning mountaineering skills, and the climbing, trekking and skiing here are truly spectacular! |

The silkscreen prints are designs by the Master Carvers at Alaska Indian Arts in Haines, Alaska. The designs are hand drawn and cut and screen printed in the graphics studio by Chris Nowicki, a master printmaker who visits each summer to print a new edition.
The proceeds from the prints help support ongoing programs such as workshops and apprenticeships. Alaska Indian Arts is a not for profit corporation dedicated to the preservation and continuation of the artistic traditions of the Northwest Coast. |

| Eldred Rock Lighthouse |
| |
 |
| |
In the stormy waters of the Lynn Canal sits a small island surrounded by majestic, snow covered mountains. The island is called Eldred Rock, and for over 100 years has been the home of the Eldred Rock Lighthouse.
Eldred Rock is the oldest original Alaskan Lighthouse building. The octagonal building is constructed of the same huge timbers brought to the island by the US Government in 1905. The light was situated 91 feet above sea level and had a range of more than 15 miles. The fog signal was a first order, compressed air siren. In addition to the lighthouse and quarters, there is a boathouse, tramways and other small outbuildings used for storage and maintenance. |

| Chilkat Dancers' Storytelling Theater Show |
| |
 |
| |
| This year, Alaska Indian Arts, parent company that has historically produced the Chilkat Dancers show for visitors since 1960, is teaming up with artists and thespians from The Sea Wolf & Whale Rider Galleries to produce an exciting new show. This year's show has a storytelling theater format rather than the traditional Native dance group experience. Bringing ancient legends to the stage in pantomime expression using carved masks and traditional costumes was one of the hallmarks of the Chilkat Dancers at Haines which set them apart from many other Native dance groups. These same legends have been developed to enhance their effect as exciting theatrical presentations featuring many new masks, costuming, theater lighting and staging. Emphasis is placed on character portrayal and plot development. Properly staged and animated masked characters have a hypnotic effect for the viewer that the ancient Natives of the Northwest Coast knew well and put to good use in their elaborate winter ceremonials. This show is performed in the Totem Village Tribal House at the Fort Seward Parade Field on a regular basis throughout the summer, giving audiences a glimpse into the past magic of totem pole and carved screen staging. Videotape coming soon! |
