San Luis Obispo County offers a variety of beautiful golf course, lakes for waterskiing, many excellent surf spots as well as nature walks. Elephant Seal Rookery is home to thousands of giant Elephant seals, creatures up to 16 feet long and 5,000-plus pounds, haul ashore at Piedras Blancas just north of San Simeon, blurting, bellowing, belching, and dangling their trunk-like noses in showy excess.
The Hearst Castle State Historical Monument probably the most famous destination in San Luis Obispo county is located in the quaint town of San Simeon. Hearst Castle, a California State Park, offers guided tours of this extraordinary historic estate. Located right off scenic Highway 1, it was originally built by art collector and publisher W. R. Hearst. Today it is one of America’s best known house museums. Its art, originating primarily from Spain and Italy, complement the Mediterranean Revival architecture and gardens. The National Geographic Theater at the Visitor Center is a giant screen theater showing the resident film “Hearst Castle - Building the Dream” as the companion film to the tours. This original 40-minute movie begins every 45 minutes and is included in The Experience Tour package. Museum shop, gift shop, food and beverage service available at the Hearst Castle Visitor Center.
Hearst Castle is located on California Highway 1, about halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles. Driving time from either city is four to six hours, depending on traffic and road conditions. From Los Angeles: Take U.S. Highway 101 north to San Luis Obispo, then California Highway 1 north about 40 miles. From San Francisco Take U.S. Highway 101 south to California Highway 46 west to California Highway 1 and north about 13 miles. If you plan to use Highway 1, be aware that it is not designed for freeway speeds and may be partly or completely closed during the rainy season. Be sure to allow plenty of time, as tours leave promptly at the time printed on your ticket.
