Sausalito has a great history going back to the days when the Spanish ruled California. Sausalito has a unique character all of it's own. It is the gateway to beautiful Marin County, the Wine Country of Napa, Sonoma and Mendocino, the redwoods and Northern California. The beautiful landscape, with the Bohemian influence has made Sausalito the art and yachting capital of Northern California. A stroll down the waterfront in mandatory, with numerous restaurants with fine cuisine, glitzy boutiques and fine art galleries defines Sausalito as one of the top vacation destinations in the world. Its always crowded with tourists during the day, but is well worth the trip to experience the exotic ambience and the fun shopping. Sausalito has nice accommodations for those not seeking the high rise atmosphere of San Francisco. There are lovely waterfront inns, the Sausalito Hotel, the main street hotels and recently a new resort with views of the Golden Gate Bridge Sausalito has beautiful marinas loaded with every description of yachts and fishing boats, lots of fun nautical activities and lots of healthy activities like hiking, walking, kayaking and boating.
Sausalito has another unique feature, houseboats, and lots of them! It is very interesting to see how many different type of boathouses there are. Artists, hippies and independent types have built this crazy collection of houseboats that has become a tourist attraction. Isabel Allende, the famous novelist from Chile now resides in Sausalito. During the Prohibition era Sausalito was a favorite location for rum runners, smugglers and bootleggers and might account for the free spirited locals that are renowned for their independent attitudes. Baby Face Nelson a notorious gangster lived in Sausalito in the 1920's. Sterling Hayden also lived here fro 1960 to 1986 when he passed away. Shel Silverstein is another of the well know residents. Hewey Lewiz and the News, Bob Marley, Fleetwood Mac, Metallica, The Drums, The Real Thing, Ferro e Cartone and The Fray all recorded music in Sausalito.
