Sullivan-Birney Ranch
This gracious 5BR/3.5BA California ranch style home was thoroughly renovated and expanded by its present owners to create the ambience of an "Italian Country Farmhouse." The home is built around a central courtyard featuring art, a fountain and several benches. A formal living room awaits guests with fireplace, tasteful decorations and deep comfortable seating. In the front of the house is a great room also featuring a fireplace and fine furnishings along with a large kitchen area. The formal dining room seats 10 and features fabulous views of the property from every window. From the dining room, one enters the library where one can enjoy quiet time reading a favorite novel or engage in a favorite board game. The spacious master bedroom occupies the entire second floor of the house and contains a beautifully appointed bath, a separate sitting room and a wonderful expansive deck from which to enjoy the late afternoon sun over the vineyards.
Barstola
This is a perfect place for a perfectly adult time. Situated on three level acres, adjacent to Batto Vineyards on one side and a seasonal creek and oak grove on the other, 2BR/2.5BA (+ 1BR/1BA guesthouse) Barstola is a tour de force of modern architecture. Taking six years to plan and build the house artfully combines steel, stucco, concrete, stone, wood, water and glass to create a minimalist masterpiece that is all air, light and crisp geometric angles. Its signature metal-clad roof evokes shades of Dutch gambrel houses and Frank Gehry. The recently landscaped, resort-like grounds by landscape architect Stephen Wheeler feature complete privacy, with 5,000 square feet of patios and decks. There’s also a 60-foot solar-heated lap pool with an automatic cover and an underwater bench – perfect for lolling and sipping – as well as a large lawn and a glass filled fire-pit for cool evenings. For all of Barstola’s benign feeling of shelter and seclusion, the views away from the house look out to lush vineyards and distant hillside villas. Another visual delight is the guest house, whose mass is set off from the lawn by a bank of tall bamboo that have been planted in a bed framed by Cor-ten steel – a wonderful modernist touch. The hand-set stone walls that shield Barstola’s entrance and run in low profile along its terrace are construction marvels.
Miraval
Miraval is a marvel, a 4BR/3.5BA vineyard-flanked aerie perched high above the Valley of the Moon that offers a quintessential Wine Country view. While vines braid the hills that flank the house on its east and west, a steep drop at the property’s southern edge plummets hundreds of feet down chaparral-clad slopes to the valley floor, a miles-long patchwork of vineyards, towns, country lanes and meandering tree-rimmed creeks. In the distance you can see Mt. Tamalpais, San Francisco, the Bay Bridge, San Pablo Bay and Mt. Diablo – an ensemble of landmarks that form one of the finest vistas in California. Miraval offers several wonderful spots from which to take in the view. There’s the extensive terrace, with a pool and a fountain as its centerpieces (the four-tiered fountain tinkles in a most delightful way!). It’s a superb mix-and-mingle space that is absolutely perfect for parties and wedding receptions. The first-story veranda, accessible from the house’s great room, dining room and master bedroom, looks out through a colonnade of arches to the great view. (A tiled deck that extends from the veranda is great for BBQs.) Above the veranda, a second level that’s accessible from two bedrooms and a sitting room takes in the same panorama. Miraval’s stucco exterior, colored olive green and creamy white, is topped with French tiles and trimmed with cast-iron railings and lamps. With its simple massing, and clean, honest design, this is an elegant place that compliments the stunning landscape surrounding it.
Greystone
What a grand, comfortable, private place this is - a 3BR/2BA main house (and 2BR/1BA guesthouse) surrounded by great lawns and small vineyards, and shaded by magnificent walnut trees from an old grove that once thrived here. Away from the house, with its steeply pitched shingle roof and tall chimney of hand-carved grey stone, the view takes in Sugarloaf on the east, the Valley of the Moon's signature peak. To the south, rich bottomlands stretch away between the valley's wooded ridges. Greystone's backyard is a superb triple treat: First, there's a large swimming pool bordered on three sides by dense lawn. A low stone wall along its fourth side forms one side of a terrace between it and a tennis court with a basketball hoop at one end - an irresistible play space! Then there's the flawless, park-like lawn on the east side of the tennis court - Picnic, anybody? Greystone has French doors everywhere along its south side, the better to let people spill out into the outdoors at will. From the parlor, you can step out to an enclosed patio and sit on cool evenings in front of a large al-fresco fireplace. Rough slate steps lead from there to a rose garden and beyond to the superb herb and cedar-flanked far lawn. A hot tub is set in a private green nook just steps from the house. The owners say they want Greystone to evoke a classic Northern California feel. With its generous use of wood, its inviting and warm earth tones, and feeling of being set amid a great garden, we'd say they've succeeded admirably.
Warm Springs House
With 200 feet of frontage along an invitingly green year-round creek, this 3BR/3BA home entices guests to spend many of their hours outdoors contemplating one of Sonoma County’s prettiest stretches of water. A two-level deck runs along the entire west side of the house, overlooking the heavily tree-lined creek, Its waters pause in a shimmering, glassy pool, then squeeze through a narrows and cascade over a short stone ledge, creating the soothing white noise of falling water. The creek’s mature broadleaf trees provide abundant shade in spring, summer and fall, In winter, after the trees have shed their leaves, sunlight pours on the deck, providing welcome brightness and warmth. Watch closely when visitors come – each of them will spend almost all of their days sitting at a favorite vantage on the deck. There’s wildlife, too, including fish, ducks, deer, squirrels and the occasional stately heron. Besides the many things to look at from it, the deck offers a spa on its lower level, plus a grill and two tables – one at each end – for chatting and dining. The house also has a sauna and a sandy play area for kids. Small gardens dot the property and its port cochere has doubled often as a splendid party “tent.” The home inspires casualness and informality. Outdoor Amenities • 200-foot frontage along a tree-lined creek • Two-level deck overlooking creek with grill, two dining areas, spa • Sauna • Small gardens throughout the property • Fountain and pond • Port cochere can double as a shaded party site
The house’s creek-facing western side is virtually all glass - either tall windows or sliding doors - the better to sense the creek. Irregular-shaped paving stones in the great room, meticulously placed, make the home feel carved from the earth. Understated furniture, with elegant lines, creates an uncluttered look. In the great room - kitchen, bar, dining and conversation areas - a floor-to-ceiling stone wall backs a fireplace whose semicircular metal flue descends dramatically, widening as it drops. A long couch that easily holds eight curves in imitation of the fireplace’s shape. The kitchen, with a very bright skylight, looks out on the dining area and its “kibitzer counter” can accommodate four. The home's south wing has two bedrooms. The master bedroom’s king bed, remote-controlled fireplace, plasma screen and walk-in closet are steps away from a twin-vanity bath with two all-glass walls facing the creek and sauna. The tiled shower has glass partitions that make it open and airy, but thanks to the creek’s thick trees, also very private. The north wing has a stone-paved bathroom and a Berber-carpeted bedroom with a work nook. An entertainment room features a pull-out bed, plasma TV and deck access. Throughout the house, there is zoned temperature control and high-speed Internet access. Indoor Amenities • Zoned temperature control • High-speed Internet access • Creek-facing western side is almost all glass • Beautiful stonework on floors and fireplace wall • Two bedroom wings provide extra privacy
Stonetree
Only minutes up a winding country lane from Glen Ellen, this 4BR/5.5 BA, two-story house nestles at the edge of a hillside clearing, surrounded on three sides by woods and looking out toward the east peaks of the Valley of the Moon. The wood-columned portico along Stonetree’s front angles off into a slightly different direction halfway along its length, breaking up the house’s mass nicely. This is a structure that fits extremely well on its site. The exterior spaces work well together: the terrace along the portico overlooks a large lawn lined with a retaining wall of hand-worked stone. The terrace leads to a large pool area at the base of an oak-studded rise. Widely set paving blocks with luxuriant grass growing between them flank the blue-tiled pool along two sides, and an arbor with a table and seats provides nice shelter from the sun. The back deck has built-in flower beds, brick pavement, stone-finished food prep surfaces and twin grills. There is easy access to all of these areas from the French door-lined family room – and it is this effortless back-and-forth between family room, pool area, portico and back deck that makes Stonetree such a great place for parties and socializing. Outdoor Amenities: • Swimming pool • Two built-in grills and large food prep area • Portico terrace for outdoor dining • Large lawn • Poolside arbor and eating area • Easy access to house
