Pompano Beach is a city in Broward County, Florida, along the coast of the Atlantic Ocean just to the north of Fort Lauderdale. The Nearby Hillsboro Inlet forms part of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway. As of 2007, the U.S. Census Bureau estimated the city's population was 102,745. The city has also been listed as one of the top real estate markets being featured in CNN, Money and the Wall Street Journal as one of the country's top vacation home markets.

Located in the heart of Florida's Gold Coast the City of Pompano Beach is the year round home to 104,402 residents.  During season (September through March) the number swells to nearly 150,000 as part-time residents from more inclement environments join us for "fun in the sun".  As the name implies (Pompano - a species of in-shore -tropical game fish) the fun includes some of the world's best sport fishing.

Golfers find living or vacationing in Pompano Beach a dream come true, with some of the world's most beautiful and challenging links just a short drive away.  It is said that a golfer could play a different course every day and still not tee off on all the links within 30 minutes of Pompano Beach. If your "fun" is spectator oriented, our City offers horse racing at the world famous Pompano Harness Track.  If you are a team sports fan, then Pompano Beach is the place to be.  Baseball fans have it both ways with the Florida Marlins calling nearby Pro Player Stadium.  Football fans can watch the Miami Dolphins host the NFL's best, while if you like to do your spectating in-doors, hockey and basketball fans are only minutes from the home arenas of the Miami Heat and Florida Panthers.

For a more laid-back approach.  Pompano Beach, as the name implies, offers miles of beautiful beach, lapped by the warm waters of the Gulf Stream.  Here you can kick back watch the surf, watch the people, or look for the Goodyear blimp that calls Pompano Beach its home.

Pompano Beach History and Current Events

Pompano Beach was settled about 1900, and incorporated as a town in 1908. Its name is derived from the Florida pompano (Trachinotus carolinus), a fish found off the Atlantic coast. Pompano Beach experienced significant growth during the Florida land boom of the 1920s. In 1950, the population of the city reached 5,682. Like most of southeast Florida, Pompano Beach experienced great growth in the late 20th century as many people moved there from northern parts of the United States. A substantial seasonal population also spends its winters in the area. In 2004, John Rayson was elected as the first official mayor of Pompano. In recent years, an effort to rejuvenate rundown areas, an example of urban blight, near the city's beach has gained momentum and is undergoing a multibillion dollar building boom.
