This pioneer settlement started in 1820 when John Kelly built the first cabin at the northwest corner of Second and Jefferson Streets. Others came from North Carolina, Virginia and Kentucky to take advantage of the area’s fertile soil and trading opportunities.

Originally named Calhoun after Senator John C. Calhoun of South Carolina, the town received its permanent name in 1832 after the senator fell from public favor. National Geographic Adventure magazine has picked Peoria as one of its 50 next great American adventure towns in which to live and relax.

The nationwide listing sought out towns and cities that currently offered activities for outdoor enthusiasts but were also considered to be up-and-coming.

The magazine selected Peoria the only Illinois city on the list for its growing miles of mountain bike trails that surround the city as well as the nightlife.
