Monmouth Plantation Resort

Monmouth Plantation, a National Historic Landmark, is a small luxury inn featuring 30 beautifully appointed rooms and suites, each having modern conveniences such as a private bathrooms, televisions, and WIFI in each room. Built by John Hankinson in 1818, Monmouth was purchased by General John A. Quitman, a hero of the Mexican War, in 1826 and remained in his family for nearly a century. After several decades of decline in the 20th century, Monmouth was returned to its antebellum magnificence by its current owners, Ron and Lani Riches.

Monmouth’s beauty and elegance have earned it a Four Diamond rating from AAA, and places on Condé Nast’s 2006 Gold List and Travel + Leisure’s 2006 Top 500 Hotels of the World: both Glamour magazine and USA Today call the antebellum inn one of the 10 most romantic places in America. Additionally, Zagat has named Monmouth “One of the Top 50 U.S. Inns & B&Bs” and American Historic Inns says it is “One of the Top Ten Most Romantic Inns of the Year.”

Monmouth Plantation has received acclaim in editorial coverage from numerous major publications. Architectural Digest praises its “spirit of respectful, though not dogmatic, authenticity” while Gourmet magazine declares it is the “most luxurious accommodations in Natchez.” The New York Times agrees, calling Monmouth “Natchez’ most elegant hotel.” According to Zagat, Monmouth is a “classy B&B that earns Mississippi’s top overall rating” and the Los Angeles Times says “its 26 carefully coiffed acres unfurl flawlessly with fountains, gardens, ponds, oaks and Spanish moss.” And the Wall Street Journal describes Monmouth’s restaurant simply: “Think Southern opulence.”

Monmouth is located in Natchez, Mississippi, only a few hours north of New Orleans, and is a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, Historic Hotels of America and Select Registry’s Distinguished Inns of North America. Condé Nast Johansens also recommends Monmouth.

Monmouth Plantation Resort Accommodations

Monmouth Plantation features 30 rooms and suites both in its antebellum mansion and in eight outbuildings positioned throughout the property’s 26 acres. Each has been decorated with the style and luxury of the antebellum period—some antiques are even original to Monmouth—and many offer working fireplaces and Jacuzzi tubs.

Though they share the charm of the Old South in common, our accommodations appeal to diverse tastes. Those looking for full immersion in the antebellum experience, for instance, will appreciate the grand scale and history of bedrooms in the main house; others might find the beauty and seclusion of the woodland surrounding Quitman’s Retreat irresistible. Or you might choose a suite in the Carriage House overlooking the croquet lawn, or a room in the Pond Cottages with views toward our ornamental lake.

Whichever room you choose, you will know that you cannot be anywhere but Monmouth Plantation!

Monmouth Plantation Resort Dining

Guests of Monmouth Plantation start the day with a complimentary full Southern breakfast that also features lighter choices such as fruits, yogurts, and cereals. And whether or not you stay at Monmouth Plantation during your visit to Natchez, you should not miss the unique experience of a dinner party at our antebellum mansion.

Guests gather in the Quitman Study for drinks and complimentary hors d’oeuvres before moving to the lavishly decorated dining room for a five-course meal prepared under the supervision of Chef Lanny Brasher. His acclaimed menu typically includes entrées such as filet mignon, prime rib, sea bass and lamb, and also offers “heart healthy” options of gazpacho for the soup course and fresh fruit for dessert.

Weddings

Rolling lawns, flower gardens, fountains and centuries-old oak trees dripping with Spanish moss create an idyllic atmosphere for weddings in Monmouth Plantation’s 26-acre park. Whether you plan a simple exchange of vows on the bridge spanning the property’s ornamental lake or a larger ceremony held beneath the wisteria-covered pergola, the mild climate at Monmouth offers the romance of the Old South year-round.

An intimate wedding for two may be followed by a five-course dinner beneath a gaslight chandelier in the antebellum mansion’s lavish parlor; or your party might move to the brick-paved courtyard for dining and dancing beneath Monmouth’s columned galleries, the air thick with the fragrance of the estate’s lush gardens.

A National Historic Landmark built in 1818, Monmouth Plantation features 30 beautifully appointed rooms and suites that have earned it a place on Condé Nast’s 2005 Gold List; it has been rated one of the 10 most romantic places in America by Glamour magazine and USA Today. The award-winning Monmouth Plantation is located a few hours north of New Orleans in historic Natchez, Mississippi, and is a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World and Historic Hotels of America.
