Papoose Creek Lodge, Vacations, Family and Luxury Travel Packages

In 1998, no one was building ecolodges in the US. Roger and Cindy Lang decided to change that. Experienced ecotourists in their own right, the Langs transformed a distinctive log home adjacent to their 26,000-acre Sun Ranch into a groundbreaking ecolodge. They created luxurious rooms in the main structure, and three award-winning, private cabins from largely recycled materials designed to celebrate the textures of the landscape around them. In 2000, Papoose Creek Lodge opened to some aplomb.

In the years that followed, Papoose Creek Lodge has become something of a national curiosity; an ecolodge hearalded in the popular media despite its modest eight-room capacity. The excitement around the Lodge has been based not only on its dramatic locale, but in a management philosophy that centers on operating in a way that stewards the land, natural resources, the local communities, and encouraging guests to learn about and celebrate the essential gifts our location provides. And America’s original ecolodge was born. Today, we still operate with preservation in mind, and our reputation still grows.
Papoose Creek Lodge Lodging
No matter what activities you choose, at the end of the day you’ll retreat to our Lodge, recognized internationally as one of Conde Nast Traveler’s Green List award recipients, and named as one of the Top Ten Ecolodges by USA Today and Fine Living.
Once a private residence, the Lodge was renovated in 1998. Our luxurious retreat welcomes you with classic log architecture, wrap-around decks, a river rock fireplace, and overstuffed chairs.
Our five inviting guest rooms and three rustic log cabins are well appointed, and include artwork and literature from around the region. The private cabins blend well into the environment and are constructed of reclaimed timber and recycled Wyoming snow fencing.

Papoose Creek Lodge Private Cabins
The Osprey Cabin
Originally constructed in the 1880s by homesteader George Wilcox as a three-sided calving shed for his farm in central Montana, the historic Osprey Cabin is truly a reclaimed building. In 1910, the shed was converted into a chicken coop, and by the late 1980s, the structure was exhibited at country fairs throughout the region. The Langs acquired the building in 1999 and transformed it into the elegant Osprey Cabin nestled in the woods behind Papoose Creek Lodge.
This private, one-level cabin has a comfortable porch, a king size bed, and stone fireplace. In the bathroom, you'll find a Jacuzzi tub, separate shower, and dual sinks, along with radiant heated tumbled marble floor tiles.
Amenities include a wet bar, CD stereo with a built in alarm clock, gentle organic soaps, shampoos and lotions, soft robes, electric fans, and selected CDs. Literature in the room includes novels by western writers, as well as bird, flower, and nature guides.
The Cutthroat and Golden Eagle cabins
The Cutthroat and Golden Eagle cabins were constructed from reclaimed barn wood and snow fencing previously used on ranches in Wyoming and Montana. Designed by architect Jonathan Foote, these cabins evoke the style of historic Montana homesteads and blend well into the environment.
Tucked into the forest just 50 yards from the Lodge, this split-level cabin features two full size beds and views in every direction. An oversized bathroom with a shower, dual sinks, and radiant heated tumbled marble floor tiles is on the ground floor, along with a wet bar and dressing area. The bedroom and sitting area is on the second floor.
Amenities include CD stereo with a built in alarm clock, gentle organic soaps, shampoos and lotions, soft robes, electric fans, and selected CDs. Literature in the room includes novels by western writers, as well as bird, flower, and nature guides.
Papoose Creek Lodge Dining
For a true taste of Montana, Executive Chef Michael Showers sources Montana’s finest ingredients — small-herd, grass-fed beef, and naturally raised pork, lamb, and poultry. He has forged relationships with the area’s organic farmers to fill the Lodge pantry with fresh and flavorful vegetables and fruit. The result is a style of cuisine Michael calls “sustainable western bistro cuisine.”
A full breakfast begins your day, a gourmet lunch provides fuel for even more outdoor activities, capped off by a dinner to satisfy even the most particular gourmand. Our wine cellar contains an extensive collection of vintage wines from the major wine growing regions of the world. Select your favorite bottle from our cellar to accompany your meal. And enjoy the full service bar for a variety of cocktails, beer and aperitifs to relax with around the fire, or share stories over. We’ve posted selections from recent menus to whet your appetite. We invite you to visit Michael and his team in the open kitchen on your next visit and explore his philosophy and the influences on his cooking style in his chef’s journal.

Sleeping With the Cattle
“Sleeping With the Cattle” is an innovative predator management program through our relationship with Sun Ranch, a 26,000-acre sustainable ranching operation. Sun Ranch is an authentic cattle ranch, home to both domestic cattle and active wolf packs. A pioneer in techniques for cattle ranching in the presence of wolves, the ranch’s predator deterrence program includes maintaining a constant human presence among the cattle to discourage wolf interaction. Lodge guests can join trained predator deterrent specialists without sacrificing the luxury of Papoose Creek Lodge, as participants stay in an upscale African safari-style wall-tent camp.
