Four of New Mexico's scenic byways have been designated as
National Scenic Byways. They are the El Camino Real, Santa Fe Trail, Jemez Mountain Trail and Billy the Kid. This designation honors those highways that are outstanding examples of scenic, historic, recreational, cultural, archaeological and/or natural qualities.

Just off US 62-180, 20 miles (32.2 km) from Carlsbad, NM and 150 miles (241.9km) from El Paso, TX. The park visitor center is near the entrance to Carlsbad Caverns, which is 7 miles (11.2 km) from White's City, NM.
The Carlsbad Caverns contain gigantic subterranean chambers and formations and are home to 300,000 Mexican free-tail bats who reside in the Caverns from the spring until October.
