The Carlyle General Information

A timeless classic, The Carlyle, A Rosewood Hotel, has been called home by leaders in world affairs, business, society, entertainment and the arts since its debut in 1930. Brilliantly positioned on Madison Avenue, it is a true New York landmark — a showcase of great art, a purveyor of privacy and a sanctuary of refined taste. Guests feel truly ensconced in an elegant private residential atmosphere, which includes a discreet and polished staff as well as world-class dining and entertainment.

The Carlyle Accommodation

With just 181 rooms and suites distributed among the hotel's 60 residential apartments, The Carlyle offers the exclusive ambience of an Upper East Side pied-à-terre.

Legendary Decorations
The Carlyle owes its refined interior style to an inimitable roster of designers, including past greats Dorothy Draper and Mark Hampton to present-day stars Thierry Despont and Alexandra Champalimaud. Recent updates to the hotel's accommodations uphold The Carlyle's venerable design heritage while adding a touch of contemporary panache.

Handsomely appointed, these rooms feature either a king bed or two twin beds and offer a quiet interior courtyard or Madison Avenue view. Located on floors 3 through 12, the Classic Room is approximately 350 square feet in size. The Carlyle Dining

The Carlyle Restaurant
A long-time favorite among prominent eastside neighbors and socialites, The Carlyle Restaurant, designed in the English manor house style by the late Mark Hampton, marries luxury with intimacy. Patrons feel at home at once, ready to devote their full attention to the menu that spotlights dishes from Executive Chef Jimmy Sakatos' native Greece, classic French influences and the finest regional American ingredients.

Café Carlyle
The nightly scene is out of an old MGM classic, camera ready with a backdrop that is pure Manhattan and a soundtrack that is classic cabaret. Café Carlyle is known for headlining incredible talents, including Eartha Kitt, Ute Lemper and Woody Allen, who regularly appears to jam with the Eddy Davis New Orleans jazz band. For the past three decades, Café Carlyle has been synonymous with the legendary Bobby Short, who thrilled sell-out crowds for 36 years. His spirit will live on through the music at Café Carlyle.

The Gallery
Exotic, elegant décor by legendary decorator Renzo Mongiardino sets the stage for a private retreat favored by the rich, the famous and the beautiful since the hotel's inception. Inspired by the sultan's dining room at the Topikapi Palace in Turkey, The Gallery is divided into two tiers.

Bemelmans Bar
Best remembered as the creator of the classic Madeline books for children, Ludwig Bemelmans once joked he'd like his tombstone to read: "Tell Them It Was Wonderful." Well, wonderful it was, and still is, at Bemelmans Bar. Named in honor of the legendary artist, Bemelmans is a timeless New York watering hole that has drawn socialites, politicians, movie stars and moguls for more than five decades.
