Holiday traditions of the 17th and 18th-century Virginia are recalled through special interpretive programs. At the Settlement, your tour will compare and contrast English Christmas customs of the period with how the season may have been observed on the difficult early years of the Jamestown colony.
The Holidays in Colonial Williamsburg are equally memorable. The Christmas Holiday season officially begins on December 7th with the Grand Illumination. Prior to the Illumination, guests can enjoy the Grand Illumination Brunch. This hearty buffet is reminiscent of meals served before a traditional hunt and features regional favorites. Colonial Williamsburg heralds the Christmas season with candles, fireworks and music during Grand Illumination. The celebration begins at 4:45pm on outdoor stages throughout the Historic Area. Colonial Williamsburg’s Fifes and Drums provide 18th-century music as costumed performers present holiday entertainment found in Williamsburg two centuries ago. At 5:45pm, the Fife and Drums signal the beginning of the Grand Illumination. At 6:15pm., candles are lit in public buildings, shops and homes, and fireworks are launched at three Historic Area locations; the Governor’s Palace, the Powder Magazine and the Capitol. After the fireworks, entertainment resumes on the outdoor stages, continuing until 7:30pm.
Guests will find themselves immersed in the past with the unique dining experiences, concerts and special holiday programs. They will learn about the legends and lore and may adopt some colonial traditions to call their own. All of the Colonial area is authentically decorated for the holiday with fresh greens, fruit, cotton and other materials available in these times. Guests can tour the holiday decorations and visit the Governors Palace, the Capitol and many other historic buildings and perhaps stop along the way for some apple cider and fresh gingerbread cookies.
