The site has long been a favorite gathering place in the nation's capital. In fact, hay, adams, their wives, clara and marian and geologist clarence king formed a close group of friends who dubbed themselves “the five of hearts.” They even had china and letterhead made that featured the moniker.

In 1884, the hays and adamses bought adjoining lots at 16th and h streets. Renowned architect henry hobson richardson designed elaborate, romanesque homes that became washington's leading salons for years. The stimulating discussions of politics, literature, science and art attracted the era's leading artists, writers and politicians, including sculptor augustus saint-gaudens, henry james, theodore roosevelt and mark twain.

Hay died in 1905, and after clara died in 1914, ownership of the hay house passed to their daughter alice wadsworth and her husband, senator james wadsworth. After adams died in 1918, the wadsworths bought his house, which they leased to the brazilian embassy.

There are a variety of room types with different views and bedding options. Choose from king-bedded rooms overlooking the white house, queen-bedded rooms with interior/courtyard views, connecting rooms, rooms with two double beds, or rooms and suites with pull-out sofas. Rooms

Guests at the hay-adams enjoy the quiet comfort normally found only in sophisticated residential interiors. All guestrooms showcase carefully chosen, european linens, marble bathrooms with brass fixtures, digitally controlled heating and air-conditioning, complimentary wi-fi access and bose cd system. Luxurious amenities and our meticulous attention to detail ensure that we exceed the expectations of even our most discriminating guests.

White house view
Featuring a direct and unobstructed view of the white house, these rooms are located on the top floors of the hotel and offer a unique and premium view. Rooms are available with either one king bed or two double beds. Some rooms feature french doors that open onto a small balcony.

St. John's church view
Featuring a scenic view of historic st. John's church, known as “church of the presidents,” these deluxe rooms are available with either one king bed or two double beds. Some rooms offer ornamental fireplaces.

Interior view
Featuring an interior or courtyard view, these accommodations offer one queen-sized bed or two double beds and the same luxurious amenities as our special "view" rooms, including a beautiful marble bathroom, writing desk with high-speed internet access, cd player, and windows which can open for fresh air.

Lafayette park view room
Featuring a scenic view of lafayette park located in front of the white house, these luxury rooms are available with either one king bed or two double beds. In the winter, these rooms offer a view of the white house through the trees.

Executive studio
Featuring a small sitting area with sofa and coffee table, these rooms offer additional space, whether for working or relaxing. They face a quiet courtyard and feature one queen bed as well as a pull-out sofa for additional guests.

Suites

The hay-adams offers a range of 20 suites, from the coveted federal suite to our handsome junior suites. Each one-bedroom or junior suite features a distinctive view of the white house, lafayette park or st. John's church, with the option to connect to a second bedroom if desired. The suites feature many of the original decorative ceilings and ornamental fireplaces, complemented with modern amenities and detailed, quality designs reminiscent of the finest residences.

The suites range from 500 to 1,000 square feet. Perfect for honeymooning couples, visiting dignitaries or executives requiring additional work space, our suites offer up to two separate bedrooms, separate living and dining areas and a choice of unbelievably scenic views.

Federal suite
This extraordinary one-bedroom suite features a separate living room and two full bathrooms. The expansive corner living room boasts a breathtaking, panoramic view of the white house, lafayette park and st. John's church, and the luxuriously appointed master bedroom features french doors which open onto a small balcony with a white house view. The dramatic and spacious living room includes a large dining table, as well as a generous sitting area ideal for either meetings or social entertaining.

These suites offer separate living room and master bedroom with two bathrooms. The spacious and elegant living room overlooks lafayette park located in front of the white house and includes a large dining table, ideal for board meetings or social entertaining.

These suites offer separate living room and master bedroom with one bathroom. The living room features sofa, coffee table and writing desk. Both master bedroom and living room face st. John's church, and the oversized bathroom features double sinks, separate shower stall and soak-in tub.

Junior suites
White house or lafayette park view junior suites - these junior suites have distinctive views and are one large, oversized room with king-sized bed and sitting area. The white house view junior suites are on the top floors and feature an unobstructed view of the white house year-round. The lafayette park view junior suites are the same configuration and offer a view of the white house through the trees in the winter.
