Fitzroy Island

Fitzroy Island is one of the most unspoiled island on the Great Barrier Reef. Fitzroy Island is located 50 minutes by high speed catamaran off Cairns, and is a beautiful rainforest clad National Park island. Fitzroy Island has excellent beaches and snorkeling, and has a good choice of accommodation on the island ranging from comfortable bunkhouse style rooms through to private beachside bungalows.

Fitzroy Island is a continental type island only 5 kilometres from the mainland and about 25 kilometres from Cairns. The 324 hectares of rainforest are almost completely surrounded by coral reef. Offshore from Fitzroy Island is great for snorkellers.

The Island is the third most northerly island in the Great Barrier reef. Butterflies, bushwalks through eucalypt and tropical rainforests, coral beaches and excellent snorkelling and diving on the reef can also been enjoyed. Walking tracks include a steep climb to a lighthouse with great views.

Sheoak, Indian Beech, Native Nutmeg, Tamarinds and Turpentine as well as native orchids are just a few examples of the exotic flora you’ll find on bushwalks through the island.

The Island has a variety of accommodation from a camp ground through to hostel-style units accommodating a few people in bunks to up-market villa units.
