La Guacima

The Butterfly Farm is a few kilometers southwest of Alajuela, near La Guacima. Various kinds of tropical butterflies are on sale as caterpillars or cocoons, and are sold mostly to foreign collectors and businesses, but the farm appeals to anyone interested in butterflies. Visitors get detailed information about species native to Costa Rica, their life cycles and existence in the country’s various environments. With luck, early morning visitors may even witness the emergence of a colorful butterfly from its cocoon. In the “bee garden” (bees were kept by the Maya), visitors can observe stinger-free bees or take a tour of the park, with its variety of tropical birds, in richly-decorated ox carts. On weekends La Guacima has a noisier attraction: car and motorcycle races.
