Canas

On the return trip to San Jose it is possible to reach the Panamericana by way of Canas, a real cowboy city. The majority of the city’s 26,000 inhabitants are sabaneros. The city got its name, however, from the wild sugar cane that still grows everywhere, even alongside the streets. Canas is a good place to stop when traveling between Palo Verde, Lomas Barbudal and San Jose.

The town itself has little in the way of tourist attractions. For visitors interested in ecology, there is an interesting center five kilometers north of Caiias, the Centro Ecologico La Pacifica, which includes a park containing many interesting nature trails.
