Monte de la Cruz

Northeast of Heredia, about three kilometers away, is San Rafael, and another eight kilometers further, the park of Monte de la Cruz. The view from the mountainside presents a panorama of the western highlands. The small privatelyowned forest preserve has a well-maintained network of trails which leads through imposing pine woods with ferns that reach up to the height of a man, wild orchids and countless epiphytes. The refreshing walk in the crisp mountain air provides a fascinating glimpse into the flora of the highlands. The park also has picnic areas with barbecue grills where visitors who have packed themselves a picnic lunch can satisfy their appetites.
