Other excursions are possible from Heredia. The idyllic mountain village of San Jose de la Montana, for example, is located at 1,500 meters above sea level on the southern slope of the Barva volcano. This health resort with its elegant 18th-century houses is extremely charming. The winding road from the little town leads to Sacramento, nine kilometers away. The town functions as the gateway to the former Volcan Barva National Park, which is now part of Braulio Carrillo National Park.
