The Brijuni Islands

The Brijuni are a little group of fourteen delightful islands in Croatia. They are across the narrow Faiana Straits, close to the west coast of the Istrian peninsula. The biggest island, Veli Brijun lies just off the coast about a mile and a half. The Brijuni Islands are known for their scenic beauty, fun vacation resorts and a Croatian National Park.

The Brijuni Islands have not been discovered by tourists from other countries and are in an unspoiled state. Movie stars like Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor, Sophia Loren, Carlo Ponti, Gina Lollobrigida and others have used this as a getaway spot.

The islands were used by the Romans for quarrying the fine quality marble they used in their palaces and bridges.

The Austrian Empire took over the islands in 1815 and built a strong fortress on the island of Veli Brijun. They left the fortress in 1893 and the island became a very popular and exclusive beach resort with a casino and yacht harbor. The island became a hotspot for Viennese aristocrats and rich Europeans. Now there is a nice golf course.

In 1945 after World War Two, President Tito of Yugoslavia decided to live on the island. He died 1980 and the islands were made into a National Park.

Croatia got its independence in 1991. The Islands were developed with tourism hotels and a beautiful safari park.
