Home Counties

The name Home Counties goes back to the days when judges traveled out from London to courts within the so-called “Home Circuit”: the territory, that is, within a day’s journey of London, allowing for one change of horses along the way.

Virtually all the major roads and the motorways in the Home Counties radiate out from London. Heading directly north from London is the old Great North Road, today either signposted as the A1 or as the A1(M). This is an ancient pre-Roman highway, which eventually passes east of the Pennine mountains, and on into Scotland, but initially takes you through Hertfordshire, a county of soft, gently rolling hills.
