Benirras Beach

A secret extremely well kept by locals, Benirras is a wide curved beach of soft sand that gently slopes into the sea. It is tucked within a small, sheltered bay, surrounded by hills. It is a great beach for snorkeling, and the surrounding hills are ideal for long walks.

On the beach, no shade is available, so cover-ups are necessary. The parking; however, is shaded beneath mature pines. At this beach, there are a couple delicious and very reasonably priced restaurants along one side of the beach, but there is no other development here. The entire area is very popular during the weekends and is a spot where many locals go. Access to the beach is via dirt track along Porto San Miguel (Puerto Balanzat), or down narrow lane off the San Miguel (San Miquel) to San Juan (Sant Joan Baptista) road.

This beach is truly a gem. A sensational time to visit, in addition to peak sunshine hours, is during the sunset. Sunday nights, especially, it is encouraged to visit the beach early in order to ensure a parking space. At this time, the entire beach becomes tranquil and all that can be heard is the sound of bongo drums. An amazing experience!

If you are lucky, you will have the opportunity to witness an ‘unplugged’ concert by local drummers and guitarists, who relish in the beautiful sunsets.
