Further up the coast at Kilauea, Kauai be sure to stop at Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge. There are lots of interesting seabirds nesting on this high seacliff area near the old lighthouse. The drive onward to Princeville and Hanalei passes through cattle ranches and rolling hill country as you get near the North Shore area. Hanalei has beautiful tropical mountain and coastal scenery with lovely white and golden sand beaches all along the coast.
Princeville and Hanalei have several of the best resorts and vacation condos throughout the area. Over the years, this area has been used for several movies and TV shows as background scenery. Distances between the sights and attractions are short. The views at Hanalei Bay are beautiful, with rugged tropical mountain peaks serving as a backdrop to a lovely crescent beach and bay.
The Hanalei River flows through the Hanalei Valley and the view from the Princeville lookout is spectacular. Hanalei town is a funky beach town favored by surfers with colorful shops and restaurants worth exploring. Your drive ends at Haena State Park and before you is the rugged Na Pali Coast. You can hike the Kalalau Trail along the coast either as a day-trip or overnight.
