Journey through Sicily, an archaeological treasure trove of ancient temples and ruins, enjoying wine and chocolate tastings. Visit with a traditional puppet maker and ascend Mount Etna by cable car. Day 1: Arrive Palermo, Sicily Arrive in Palermo, where you are met and transferred to your hotel located in the city’s historic center. Later, join your fellow guests for welcome drinks and dinner. Hotel Palazzo Sitano | Meals: D Day 2: Palermo | Mosaics of Times Past Explore Palermo, Sicily’s chief port, to see its Cathedral, Pretoria Fountain and Norman Royal Palace. After lunch, visit the 12th-century Cathedral of Monreale, lavishly decorated with mosaics depicting Biblical events. Continue to the cloistered gardens decorated with mosaics. Hotel Palazzo Sitano | Meals: B Day 3: Segesta/Erice/Marsala/Sciacca | Wine Tasting Drive to Segesta to see its beautifully preserved fifth-century-BC temple. Continue to Erice, a medieval town perched 2,600 feet above the bay of Castellammare del Golfo, for magnificent views of the surrounding area. Travel along the Via del Sale (salt way,) toward Marsala, stopping to admire the windmills and learn about salt production. In Marsala, visit a local wine cellar to learn the history of making Marsala fortified wine and enjoy a tasting. Verdura Golf & Spa Resort | Meals: B L D Day 4: Sciacca/Selinunte | Archaeology Beside the Sea From Sciacca, continue to Selinunte. Walk around this vast archaeological site that displays the remains of eight temples set against the blue Mediterranean Sea. After lunch, the afternoon at leisure to relax and enjoy the facilities at your resort. Verdura Golf & Spa Resort | Meals: B L Day 5: Agrigento/Piazza Armerina | Valley of Temples Drive to Agrigento to view the ancient Valley of Temples that includes the famous Temple of Concord, a superb example of sacred classical architecture. Continue to Piazza Armerina, a graceful old countryside town, to explore Villa Romana del Casale. Its mosaics are unparalleled, beautifully depicting hunting and domestic life. Donnafugata Golf Resort & Spa | Meals: B L D Day 6: Ragusa/Modica | Val di Noto and Artisan Chocolate The entire Val di Noto region, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is seven towns influenced by the Greeks, Arabs, Byzantines, Romans, Normans and Spaniards. Explore Ragusa, an explosion of Sicilian Baroque architecture. Continue to the village of Modica, known for its chocolate. Enjoy a private chocolate- making demonstration and a tasting in the laboratory of an artisan chocolate maker. Donnafugata Golf Resort & Spa | Meals: B D Day 7: Syracuse & Ortygia | Dionysius, Ear Visit the Greek Theater in Syracuse, an important example of theater architecture, and Dionysius, Ear, a nearby carved-stone cave with amazing acoustic qualities. Travel to the charming neighborhood of Syracuse known as Ortygia, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Enjoy time at leisure to explore the town before returning to your hotel. Donnafugata Golf Resort & Spa | Meals: B D Day 8: Catania and Taormina | Traditional Puppetry Travel to Taormina, stopping en route in Catania, where you visit a maker of traditional Sicilian puppets. Next, visit Catania’s colorful fish market and enjoy a lunch of fresh fish. Continue to glamorous Taormina. Stroll its colorful main street, Umberto Corso, and then visit the Greek Theater for incredible views of Mt. Etna. San Domenico Palace | Meals: B L Day 9: Mount Etna | Snow-Capped Majesty Head into the fertile lava flow country of Europe’s largest active volcano. Ascend to 6,000 feet and admire the stunning views as you go. Then, take a cable car up to where the landscape appears lunar-like. Return to Taormina and later gather for a farewell dinner. San Domenico Palace | Meals: B D Day 10: Depart Catania After breakfast, transfer to the airport and depart Meals: B
