Two great wonders of Latin America, the lost Incan citadel of Machu Picchu and the lush Amazon River, come to life on this independent journey. Walk among the remains of the Inca civilization, and then witness the remarkable biodiversity of the Amazon on board the adventure ship ‘Aria. Day 1: Arrive Lima, Peru Upon arrival at Lima International Airport, you are met and transferred to your hotel. Miraflores Park Hotel Day 2: Cusco/Sacred Valley | Weaving Past with Present Fly to Cusco, one-time capital of the Incan Empire, high in the Andes. Upon arrival, transfer to the Sacred Valley of the Incas, Urubamba. On the way, visit Awanakancha, a center where South American camelids (llamas, alpacas, guanacos and vicuñas) are bred. Learn about the valuable fibers created from their coats as well as the ancient weaving techniques still in use. Spend your afternoon at leisure and acclimatize. Sol y Luna Lodge & Spa | Meals: B L Day 3: Sacred Valley | Mountainside Fortress Today, visit Ollantaytambo, a massive fortress of rose-colored granite that climbs mountainside terraces to the top of a peak. Marvel at this once-thriving complex of baths, temples and military barracks; the site of the Incas,™ greatest victory against the Spanish. Continue to the Kuychi Center, a charity created to support the Niños del Arco Iris (Children of the Rainbow), where you enjoy a barbecue lunch in the gardens. Continue to the market of Chincheros and meet Nilda Callañaupa Alvarez, an expert Peruvian weaver, to learn about this native art form. Sol y Luna Lodge & Spa | Meals: B L Day 4: Machu Picchu | Stunning Lost City Board the Vistadome train bound for Machu Picchu, the crowning achievement of the Incan civilization. Explore the city’s ruins, and feel its pulse as you visualize the lives of the priests, craftsmen, and servants who inhabited this remote citadel. Overlooking the raging Urubamba River and discovered in a hidden tangle of vines and trees, the city of Machu Picchu will forever hold the secret of its purpose the Incas left no written records. Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge | Meals: B L D Day 5: Machu Picchu | Hike to the Inca Trail Rise early for a walk through the misty ruins at sunrise, or choose between two guided hikes to nearby points of interest: the Inti Punku, or Sun Gate, entry point to Machu Picchu on the Inca Trail; or the Huayna Picchu: a high peak affording excellent views of the ruins. Later, return to Ollantaytambo. Hotel Monasterio | Meals: B L Day 6: Cusco | Massive Walls of Sacsayhuaman Tour the city, visiting the Cathedral on the Plaza de Armas and the Santo Domingo Temple, built on the foundations of the Koricancha, the Inca,™s principal religious structure. Next, travel just outside of Cusco to behold the ruins of Sacsayhuaman, an enduring testament to Incan architectural skills. Examine its colossal stone blocks, cut and fitted together with incredible precision and without a single drop of mortar to hold them in place. Spend your afternoon at leisure. Hotel Monasterio | Meals: B Day 7: Iquitos | Prelude to Adventure Fly to Lima and connect to Iquitos, where you join your luxury adventure cruise ship ,˜Aria,™ for your cruise down the Amazon River. Launched in 2011, ,˜Aria,™ offers an extraordinary level of comfort. ‘Aria’ | Meals: B D Days 8-9: Amazon River Cruise | Journey of Discovery For two days aboard ,˜Aria,,™ explore the small inlets and various winding river systems that make up the mighty Amazon. Travel the inner rivers and black water lagoons and visit local villages along the way, learning about a traditional way of life in this scantly populated region. As you float through the flooded forests, your guide points out a wealth of flora and fauna, including giant six-foot-wide lily pads. Embark on evening expeditions for a chance to see the river,™s nocturnal animals, such as the elusive caiman, stir to action.
