New Delhi

The Capital City of India is New Delhi. It’s a busy city with a lot of interesting things going on at all times. There are numerous historical buildings and attractions that were built over a thousand years ago. Culturally, New Delhi is an exciting place with literally hundreds of unique cultural events, festivals and annual celebrations to see and participate in. The Independence Day and Republic Day and Gandhi Jayanti celebrations are the biggest annual event, however, because of India’s multi-cultural and multi-ethnic mixture, there is always a celebration happening somewhere in the city.

Religious festivals include Diwali (the festival of light), Maha Shivaratri, Teej, Guru Nanak Jayanti, Baisakhi, Durga Puja, Holi, Lohri, Eid ul-Fitr, Eid ul-Adha, Christmas and Mahavir Jayanti. The Kite Flying Festival, International Mango Festival and Vasant Panchami (the Spring Festival) are held every year. The Qutub Festival is a cultural event during which performances of musicians and dancers from all over India are showcased at night, with the Qutub Minar as the chosen backdrop of the event.

There are dozens of fabulous museums to explore–too many to see on one vacation, but the Gandhi Smriti is not to be missed. More exciting museums: The National Philatelic Museum, National Handicrafts and Handlooms Museum, National Gallery of Modern Art, National Rail Museum, National Museum of Natural History, Nehru Planetarium, Shankar’s International Dolls Museum. and Supreme Court of India Museum.
