For many, an even greater attraction than the zoo is Kelly Tarlton’s Underwater World, only 3 miles (6km) from the city on Tamaki Drive. Here one has the unique op-portunity of experiencing what it is like to go diving in New Zealand’s coastal waters and to travel in Antarctica, without getting wet or freezing in the process! In the main aquarium section, a moving walkway goes through a clear acrylic tunnel that allows visitors to experience the sensation of having schools of fish and even sharks swim around them.
Also part of the complex is the Antarctic Encounter. In this experience, a trip through the south polar ice is vividly simulated with an animated killer whale and a snow storm adding to the thrills. All in all, Kelly Tarlton’s is probably the closest most of us will ever come to one of the world’s most extreme environments.
